Symptoms

A key sign of Anagyris latent virus infection is the chlorosis of leaf blades. Affected plants often display mosaic patterns, manifesting as light green or yellow spots of irregular shapes.

With intensive pathogen development, leaves may become deformed and their edges curl, which disrupts the photosynthetic process. In some cases, overall growth suppression (stunting) of the entire plant is observed.

In certain instances, the infection may remain latent, meaning it occurs without visible external symptoms. Carrier plants appear visually healthy but remain dangerous sources of infection for neighboring crops.

Changes also affect the development of reproductive organs. Infected plants often produce fewer inflorescences, which critically reduces yield potential and the reproductive capabilities of the species.

The presence of the virus can only be confirmed through laboratory diagnostic methods, such as ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) or PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), as visual symptoms can easily be confused with micronutrient deficiencies.

The primary natural reservoir for the infection is Anagyris foetida, a plant widely distributed in the Mediterranean region. The virus is capable of infecting both wild species and certain agricultural crops.

In the field, transmission of the pathogen occurs primarily through mechanical tissue damage. Transmission can also occur through the use of non-sterile agricultural tools during pruning or harvesting processes.
