Description
Symptoms
The primary symptom of infection is the appearance of characteristic ring-shaped spots on the leaf surface. These spots may feature chlorotic or necrotic margins, giving the plant an unhealthy appearance.
As the disease progresses, a distinct mosaic pattern becomes visible on the leaf blades. Light green areas alternate with dark green ones, creating a mottled look that significantly reduces the plant's decorative value.
In later stages of the infection, general deformation and curling of the leaves are observed. Infected plants exhibit significantly stunted growth and shortened internodes, resulting in a less compact and aesthetically pleasing habit.
In some cases, symptoms manifest as angular spots that eventually merge into large zones of necrosis. Leaf tissues in affected areas may become thin and lose turgor pressure, even when soil moisture is adequate.

Pathogen
The causative agent of this disease is the Kalanchoe ringspot virus, which belongs to the Potyvirus group. This viral pathogen contains single-stranded RNA and primarily affects plants of the Crassulaceae family.
The virus acts as an obligate parasite, multiplying exclusively within the living cells of the host plant. In commercial greenhouse settings, transmission most frequently occurs through mechanical means, such as the use of unsterilized pruning tools or contact between damaged tissues.
A specific feature of potyviruses is their ability to systemically infect all organs of the plant. Once initial infection occurs, viral particles move through the phloem, infecting new shoots and developing leaves.
The presence of the virus in Kalanchoe tissues often remains latent until the plant is exposed to stress factors. Nevertheless, even asymptomatic plants serve as constant reservoirs of infection within greenhouses.
Identification of the pathogen is difficult due to its tendency to mimic physiological disorders. To accurately confirm a diagnosis, laboratory methods such as ELISA or PCR analysis are required.
Conditions for development
The spread of the virus occurs mainly through contaminated gardening tools. Knives, pruning shears, and other instruments that have not been disinfected are primary vectors for transmission during mass propagation by cuttings.
Optimal conditions for viral multiplication coincide with periods of active plant growth at high temperatures. Greenhouse environments with high humidity facilitate faster movement of the pathogen through the vascular system.
High plant density in containers promotes rapid contact between healthy and infected individuals. Leaf-to-leaf contact during watering or handling of pots facilitates the spread of the infection.
Stress caused by insufficient light or poor nutrient management weakens the plant's immunity. Stressed Kalanchoe plants show viral symptoms much more clearly and lose their decorative quality more rapidly.
Lack of pest control, particularly for aphids or thrips, also creates a risk of spread, although contact-based mechanical transmission remains the primary route during standard agricultural procedures.
Why it matters
Kalanchoe ringspot virus causes significant economic losses for professional floral nurseries. Affected plants lose their market value and must be discarded immediately as they cannot be sold.
The disease disrupts photosynthesis, leading to reduced metabolic activity in the plant. As a result, flowering becomes sparse, and flower stalks become weak and deformed.
Within a greenhouse environment, the virus can spread rapidly across entire batches of material if proper hygiene is not maintained, leading to total crop loss and severe financial damage.
Infected plants become extremely susceptible to secondary bacterial infections. Necrotic spots often act as entry points for rot-causing pathogens, leading to the rapid death of the Kalanchoe.
Treatment of virus-infected plants is not economically viable in commercial production. The only effective method to manage the disease is the immediate and radical removal of all infection sources.
Protection
The primary control measure is the exclusive use of healthy, virus-free planting material. Sourcing cuttings only from reputable suppliers with phytosanitary certificates is essential for maintaining a clean collection.
Strict sanitary treatment of tools is mandatory. After handling each plant or group of plants, shears and knives must be disinfected using alcohol or sodium hypochlorite solutions.
All plants showing suspicious signs must be isolated immediately from the rest of the crop. Ideally, such specimens should be destroyed by burning to ensure they do not contaminate compost piles.
Maintaining optimal growing conditions is vital, avoiding overwatering and excessive nitrogen fertilization, which can make plant tissues softer and more vulnerable to physical injury.
Systematic monitoring of plant health allows for the identification of the disease at an early stage. Detecting primary infection foci allows growers to minimize losses and stop potential epidemics within the greenhouse.
