Symptoms

The primary symptom of Iris mosaic virus is the appearance of light green or yellowish streaks, spots, or mosaic patterns on the foliage, running parallel to the leaf veins.

During the flowering stage, the blooms often exhibit color breaking, which manifests as irregular streaks, spots, or patchy color changes on the flower petals.

Infected plants may show stunted growth, twisted flower stalks, and deformed leaf tissue compared to healthy, vigorous specimens.

As the infection progresses, the overall size of the flowers decreases, and the vibrancy of the plant significantly declines over subsequent seasons.

Symptoms can vary widely depending on the iris cultivar and environmental conditions, and some plants may harbor the virus without showing obvious distress.

Pathogen

The pathogen is caused by Iris mild mosaic virus (IMMV) or Iris severe mosaic virus (ISMV), which are members of the Potyvirus genus.

These viruses are filamentous particles that enter plant cells and disrupt normal metabolic processes, leading to systemic infection throughout the plant.

The virus cannot survive in the soil independently and does not spread through simple contact between healthy and diseased leaf surfaces.

Conditions for development
