Description

Symptoms

The main external sign of the disease is the appearance of characteristic light or yellowish streaks, stripes, and spots of various shapes on the narcissus leaves.

At the beginning of the growing season, the affected tissues may show a slight mosaic pattern, which becomes more pronounced and contrasting over time.

Leaf blades of diseased plants often deform, twist, or become wrinkled, which significantly reduces the decorative quality of the crop.

Flower stalks become shorter when the plant is heavily affected by the virus, and the flowers themselves are smaller, often losing their typical color and developing petal spotting.

Over time, a general delay in growth and development is observed, and the plant appears stunted and weakened compared to healthy specimens.

Pathogen

The causative agent of the disease is the Narcissus stripe virus, which belongs to the genus Potexvirus and has filamentous virions.

This is a systemic disease that affects not only narcissi but also some other species of decorative bulbous plants from the Amaryllidaceae family.

The virus persists inside the bulbs, so when using planting material from infected plants, the infection is transmitted from year to year.

Unlike many other viral pathogens, Potexvirus narcissi can be transmitted mechanically through damage to the tissues.

An important role in spreading is played by contact between plants, garden tools, cutting knives, or gardening gloves that carry traces of sap from infected plants.

Conditions for development

The spread of the virus occurs mainly through physical contact during agricultural activities, such as weeding, cutting, or soil cultivation.

Warm and humid conditions during the spring period promote more active sap flow, which facilitates the transmission of the virus during leaf micro-injuries.

Dense plantings of bulbous plants create ideal conditions for the transmission of the pathogen from one plant to another when leaves touch during windy weather.

The lack of proper disinfection of work tools during the care of flower crops is a key factor in the rapid spread of the virus in nurseries.

The virus can accumulate in the population gradually, so in the first years, symptoms may be hidden or weak, making early diagnosis difficult.

Why it matters

Narcissus stripe virus significantly reduces the market value of cut flowers and makes the plants unsuitable for commercial sale.

In affected specimens, photosynthesis processes are disrupted, which leads to the weakening of bulbs and poor maturation by the end of the season.

Constant depletion of the plant leads to the fact that after a few years, the bush may completely stop flowering and eventually die.

The presence of the virus in the bulbs makes them more susceptible to other fungal and bacterial rots during winter storage.

Economic damage consists of the necessity to discard large batches of planting material, which cannot be cured with chemical preparations.

Protection

The main control method remains the strict culling and destruction of all plants showing signs of viral infection immediately after their discovery.

It is necessary to carry out regular disinfection of all tools (pruners, knives) in an alcohol solution or a potassium permanganate solution after working with each plant.

For planting, only healthy, verified planting material obtained from certified specialized farms should be used.

It is important to manage insect pests, which, although not the primary vectors of this specific virus, can injure tissues and facilitate infection.

  • Regularly inspect plantings during the active growth phase.
  • Maintain spatial isolation between old and young plantings.
  • Promptly remove weeds from the area.
