Description

Symptoms

Disease symptoms can vary depending on the coleus cultivar and environmental conditions. Chlorosis of the leaves, manifesting as yellow spots or a characteristic mosaic pattern, is most frequently observed.

One of the signs is the deformation of the leaf blade: leaves become asymmetrical, wrinkled, or take on an unusually twisted shape. Plant growth is noticeably slowed down.

A significant reduction in leaf size (stunting) is observed compared to normal specimens of the same cultivar. The brightness and intensity of leaf coloration in affected plants often decrease, making them appear dull.

In some cases, the infection leads to shortened internodes, making the bush more compact but also sickly "bushy" or sparse due to the loss of a portion of the leaf mass.

It is important to remember that signs are often masked by the varietal characteristics of coleus, so accurate diagnosis requires laboratory testing via PCR or molecular hybridization.

Pathogen

The causative agent of the disease is Coleviroid alphacolei (formerly known as Coleus blumei viroid 1, CbVd-1), a small circular RNA viroid. This pathogen lacks a protein coat and is capable of autonomous replication within the host plant cells.

This viroid belongs to the Pospiviroidae family. Unlike viruses, it does not encode its own proteins, but utilizes the plant's enzymatic machinery for its own replication, intercepting control over cellular metabolism.

The infection primarily affects plants of the genus Solenostemon, commonly known as coleus. The spread of the pathogen occurs mainly through vegetative propagation (cuttings) and contaminated gardening tools.

The viroid is an obligate parasite requiring living tissue to survive. It can exist in a latent form for a long time without showing visible signs of damage on the parent plant.

Under natural conditions, the viroid spreads through mechanical injuries, for example, during pinching, pruning, or by contact of sap between infected and healthy plants in dense plantings.

Why it matters

The main danger of Coleviroid alphacolei lies in the reduction of plant decorative quality, which makes them unsuitable for commercial sale in nurseries and garden centers.

Viroid infection leads to the weakening of the plant's immune system, making it more susceptible to secondary bacterial and fungal infections, as well as environmental stress factors.

In production conditions, infection of just one batch can lead to the death or disposal of a significant quantity of planting material, resulting in serious economic losses.

Due to the high stability of viroids in the environment, the pathogen can persist on the surface of working tools, creating a constant risk of reinfection in greenhouse facilities.

The lack of effective chemical treatments for curing plants of viroids makes the infection systemic: an infected plant remains a carrier of the pathogen for life.

Protection

The only reliable control method is strict phytosanitary monitoring and culling of all plants suspected of having a viroid infection. Affected specimens must be destroyed immediately.

When taking cuttings, only healthy mother stock that has passed prior testing or was obtained from verified suppliers of certified material should be used.

Strict hygiene must be maintained during work: gardening tools (knives, secateurs) must be regularly disinfected with alcohol solutions (at least 70%) or sodium hypochlorite after contact with each plant.

Avoid overcrowding of plants, which facilitates the rapid mechanical transfer of infection from plant to plant during maintenance, watering, or exposure to air currents in the greenhouse.

It is recommended to implement a system of regular collection monitoring and timely PCR diagnostics, especially when even minimal deviations from the norm are detected.
