Description

Symptoms

Initial symptoms include the upward curling of leaflets on the upper part of the plant along the central vein. The leaves become stiff, leathery in texture, and frequently display a chlorotic or pale yellowish appearance.

If the tubers were infected in the previous season, symptoms appear shortly after emergence. Plants show severe stunting, and the leaves take on a characteristic concave shape, often described as "boat-shaped" leaflets.

The underside of the leaves often develops an anthocyanin pigment, causing a reddish or purplish discoloration. This is a direct consequence of the disruption of sugar transport from the leaves to the roots.

The root system of infected plants is poorly developed. Tubers from severely infected plants are small, and in some varieties, a phenomenon known as "net necrosis" occurs, where brown strands appear in the tuber flesh.

Symptoms are most prominent during hot and dry weather conditions. It is crucial to distinguish viral leafroll from physiological rolling, which is caused by drought or physical damage, and does not involve systematic internal necrosis.

Pathogen

The causative agent is the Potato leafroll virus (PLRV), a member of the Polerovirus genus. It is a single-stranded RNA virus that specifically infects the phloem tissue of the plant, disrupting the translocation of photosynthetic products.

The virus is a specialized obligate parasite that is not transmitted mechanically or through the soil. Its primary vectors in nature are various aphid species, with the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) being the most significant transmitter.

Transmission occurs in a persistent manner. The aphid must feed on an infected plant for a specific duration to acquire the virus, after which it remains capable of infecting healthy plants for the rest of its life cycle.

The virus survives in infected potato tubers, which serve as the main source of primary infection when planted. Secondary spread within the field is facilitated by insect vectors moving from neighboring infected plots.

The term Begomovirus tuberosi is often found in outdated or incorrect taxonomic references; PLRV is distinctly a Polerovirus, whereas Begomovirus species typically cause different viral pathologies in solanaceous plants.

Why it matters

Potato leafroll virus is recognized as one of the most economically devastating potato diseases. Depending on the variety and timing of infection, it can lead to yield losses exceeding 50%.

The primary economic impact lies in the degradation of tuber quality. Since the plant cannot transport starch effectively, the tubers have low dry matter content, which is unacceptable for industrial processing and chip production.

Infection leads to the rapid degeneration of the potato cultivar. Replanting tubers from infected stock leads to a cumulative increase in viral load, effectively rendering the seed material useless after only a few growing seasons.

The internal "net necrosis" caused by PLRV makes tubers unmarketable. Such tubers have poor culinary quality and are highly susceptible to secondary storage rots during the winter season.

The spread of the infection reduces the overall vigor and sprouting energy of the seed potatoes. This forces farmers to incur high costs for constant renewal of seed stocks and intensive field management programs.

Protection

The primary control strategy is the use of healthy, virus-free seed potatoes. Utilizing elite certified seed stock, verified by ELISA testing, is the most effective preventative measure against the disease.

Rigorous management of aphid populations is essential. This involves systematic insecticide treatments applied at critical periods during the early growing season to disrupt the virus transmission cycle.

Spatial isolation of potato fields is a vital agronomic practice. New potato plantings should be situated as far as possible from old fields or weed-heavy areas where the virus might persist in overwintering hosts.

Effective weed control surrounding potato fields is crucial, as many solanaceous weeds serve as natural reservoirs for the virus and as breeding grounds for aphid populations.

At the end of the vegetative cycle, early vine killing (desiccation) should be implemented. This stops the translocation of the virus to the tubers and prevents aphids from feeding on the foliage just before harvest.
