Description
Symptoms
The primary symptom of the disease is the appearance of a characteristic reticulate pattern on the leaves, resembling yellowing of the veins. Over time, affected areas may merge, forming large yellow or chlorotic patches.
Plants infected with the virus often show signs of stunted growth and poor development. Internodes become shortened, and the plant itself takes on a dwarf or deformed appearance compared to healthy specimens.
Leaf blades of infected ageratums may deform, curl downwards, or develop a wrinkled surface. The leaf margins often become irregular or wavy.
Flowering is significantly reduced or completely ceases when the plant is affected by the yellow vein virus. If flowers do form, they are often distorted, smaller in size, and have a faded, atypical color.
In advanced cases, progressive tissue necrosis is observed, leading to a complete loss of decorative value and premature death of the plant. Symptoms may appear unevenly across different branches of a single plant.
Pathogen
The causative agent is the Ageratum yellow vein virus (AYVV), which belongs to the genus Begomovirus of the family Geminiviridae. It is a virus with a single-stranded circular DNA genome closely related to other harmful begomoviruses.
The virus is an obligate parasite that replicates exclusively within living host cells. It exhibits high genetic variability, which complicates the breeding of resistant plant varieties.
The natural vector of the virus is the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The insect acquires the virus while feeding on an infected plant and is subsequently capable of transmitting it to healthy crops.
The virus has a persistent type of transmission: once a whitefly has acquired the virus, it remains an infection vector for the rest of its life, spreading the pathogen over significant distances.
In addition to ageratum, this pathogen can infect a wide range of cultivated and wild plants from various families, making it highly dangerous for both greenhouses and open-field cultivation.
Conditions for development
The development of the disease is closely linked to the activity of whitefly populations, which reproduce most intensely in high temperatures and moderate humidity.
In greenhouse conditions, the virus can spread year-round if a stable microclimate favorable to insect vectors is maintained.
Dense planting facilitates faster spread of the infection, as it makes it easier for the whiteflies to move between neighboring plants.
Weeds around fields or greenhouses often act as a virus reservoir where the pathogen persists during the off-season. Failing to clean surrounding areas increases the risk of outbreaks.
Untimely control of initial whitefly individuals in the field creates conditions for the explosive spread of the viral infection among ornamental crops.

Protection
The primary method of protection is strict phytosanitary control, including the destruction of all infected plants by burning to prevent further spread.
Control of whiteflies as the main vector is critical. Regular application of insecticides, alternating between different chemical classes to prevent resistance, is necessary.
Using protective screens on greenhouse windows and doors is recommended to prevent the entry of insect pests from the outside.
Regular weeding inside greenhouses and in the surrounding areas is important to eliminate potential natural reservoirs of the pathogen.
