Description
Symptoms
The most diagnostic symptom is the appearance of yellow banding or a net-like chlorotic pattern along the veins of the leaves, which gives the disease its name.
In early stages, the chlorosis might be subtle, but as the viral load increases, the banding becomes sharp, distinct, and highly visible against the green leaf surface.
Advanced stages of the infection often lead to significant leaf malformation, including crinkling, cupping, and a reduction in the overall size of the foliage.
Floral bracts, which are the main ornamental feature of the bougainvillea, may exhibit reduced coloration, smaller size, and distorted shapes, significantly lowering the plant's aesthetic value.
Affected plants often show stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a general lack of vigor, making them appear weaker than non-infected counterparts.
Pathogen
The causative agent of this disease is the Bougainvillea vein-banding virus, which belongs to the Badnavirus genus. It is a double-stranded DNA virus that specifically targets tropical and ornamental plants.
The virus particles exhibit a typical bacilliform morphology. Once inside the host plant, the pathogen spreads systemically, localizing primarily in the phloem tissues where it disrupts nutrient transport.
This is classified as a chronic viral infection that alters the plant's metabolic pathways. The virus remains stable within the plant tissues throughout the entire lifecycle of the host.
In the natural environment and commercial greenhouses, the virus is primarily transmitted by sap-sucking insects, with mealybugs being the most documented vector.
Furthermore, human intervention—specifically the use of infected cuttings for vegetative propagation—is a primary driver of the virus's spread in ornamental horticulture.
Conditions for development
The spread of the disease is highly correlated with the presence and population density of insect vectors, which thrive in warm, humid conditions typical of greenhouse environments.
High-density planting in nurseries creates ideal conditions for vectors to migrate between plants, facilitating the rapid systemic distribution of the virus throughout a collection.

Why it matters
The primary harm is the systemic and irreversible nature of the infection; once a bougainvillea is infected with Badnavirus, it cannot be cured.

Chronic infection drains the plant's resources, leading to poor resilience against secondary stress factors such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or fungal pathogens.
