Description

Symptoms

The disease is often referred to as "latent" because many coleus cultivars do not show symptoms immediately after infection, acting as asymptomatic carriers for weeks or months.

When symptoms appear, they typically include chlorosis (yellowing), mosaic patterns on the leaves, and irregular light-green or white spotting that can be mistaken for nutrient deficiencies.

Affected plants often exhibit morphological abnormalities, such as leaf crinkling, curling, or a significant reduction in leaf size, which diminishes the plant's ornamental appeal.

Stunted growth is a hallmark of the infection. Plants become significantly smaller than healthy counterparts, with shortened internodes that create a dense, bunched-up appearance.

  • Leaf chlorosis and mottled patterns.
  • Distortion and curling of leaves.
  • Severe stunting of growth.
  • Reduced internode length (rosetting).

Pathogen

The causative agent of this disease is Coleus blumei viroid 1 (CbVd-1), which belongs to the genus Pospiviroid. Viroids are the smallest known infectious agents, consisting exclusively of a short, single-stranded circular RNA molecule without a protein coat.

Unlike viruses, the viroid does not encode its own proteins. It relies entirely on the host plant's RNA polymerase to replicate within the nucleus, disrupting normal cellular processes and development.

Due to its compact and robust structure, CbVd-1 is highly stable. It can survive on greenhouse surfaces, pots, and gardening tools, making it extremely difficult to eradicate once it enters a facility.

This pathogen is systemic, meaning it spreads through the plant's vascular system, eventually colonizing all parts of the organism, including the roots, stems, and leaves.

Transmission occurs almost exclusively through mechanical contact. Human activity during pruning, pinching, or propagation is the primary vector for spreading the infectious sap from plant to plant.

Conditions for development

The spread of CbVd-1 is heavily facilitated by intensive propagation practices. Taking cuttings from an infected mother plant ensures that every new seedling will also carry the viroid.

Shared tools are a major hazard. If a knife or pruner is used on an infected plant and not disinfected, it will efficiently inoculate every subsequent plant it touches.

High-density greenhouse environments promote leaf-to-leaf contact, allowing the viroid to spread even during minor plant handling or when moving trays across the growing area.

Although the viroid is hardy, it is most active in terms of spread during the peak growing season when plants are being constantly handled, pinched, or pruned by greenhouse workers.

Environmental factors like temperature or humidity do not trigger the disease, but they support the rapid growth of the host, which in turn masks the developmental slowing caused by the viroid until it becomes severe.

Why it matters

The primary economic impact is the loss of commercial value. Infected coleus plants no longer meet the quality standards required for the ornamental trade, leading to significant financial losses.

The systemic nature of the infection means that there is no chemical cure available. Once a plant is infected, it remains a permanent source of inoculum for the entire greenhouse.

Large-scale production facilities are at risk of losing entire blocks of inventory if the viroid is introduced, requiring massive culling efforts to contain the outbreak.

Infected coleus are weakened, which makes them more susceptible to opportunistic secondary infections by fungi or bacteria, potentially leading to total plant collapse.

Because the disease is often symptomless initially, growers may unknowingly distribute infected material to retailers and customers, damaging the reputation of the nursery business.

Protection

The cornerstone of management is strict sanitation. All tools used for propagation, pruning, or cutting must be thoroughly disinfected with appropriate agents between every single plant.

Establish a rigorous quarantine policy for all new plant material. New arrivals should be isolated and monitored for an extended period before being introduced to the main collection.

Use only certified disease-free stock plants for propagation. Regular diagnostic testing, such as RT-PCR, is recommended to ensure that mother plants are truly free of the CbVd-1 viroid.

If any plant shows signs of mosaic, stunting, or leaf distortion, it must be discarded immediately. Never attempt to "save" or propagate from a plant showing suspicious symptoms.

Maintain high levels of workplace hygiene, including regular washing of hands and surfaces, to minimize the risk of mechanical transmission throughout the cultivation cycle.
