Barley yellow dwarf, caused by viruses in the genus Polerovirus, represents one of the most widespread and economically devastating viral diseases affecting cereal crops globally. The virus is not transmitted mechanically; its transmission relies entirely on aphid vectors in a persistent manner.

The host range is broad and includes major cereal species such as barley, wheat, oats, and rye, alongside various wild grass species. These wild grasses act as vital reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to persist throughout the year and infect new crops as they emerge.

Symptoms of the disease are typically observed as yellowing, reddening, or purpling of leaves, starting from the tips and progressing towards the base. Infected plants exhibit characteristic stunting, stunted root systems, and excessive tillering, which significantly hampers the formation of grain and reduces overall yield.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of the disease. Warm autumns or mild winters encourage the migration and reproduction of aphid populations, leading to early infection of winter crops, which usually results in the most severe yield losses.
