Description
The Pleurotaceae family includes fungi that are widely recognized as wood-decay pathogens in agricultural and forestry contexts. While some species are cultivated for human consumption, their presence on living trees often indicates a parasitic relationship that leads to significant structural degradation of the host plant.
These fungi typically affect a variety of hardwood species, including popular fruit trees and various forest trees. The pathogens infect the host through entry points such as broken branches, pruning wounds, or damage to the tree's bark, eventually colonizing the sapwood and heartwood of the tree.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of white rot, which degrades the wood's lignin, leading to brittleness and an increased risk of stem failure. Externally, the emergence of fungal fruiting bodies (mushrooms) on the trunk is a definitive sign of advanced infection, often accompanied by the dieback of upper canopy branches.
The spread of Pleurotaceae is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and warm temperatures. Once established, the mycelium spreads through the internal vascular system of the tree, draining energy reserves and ultimately undermining the biological functions of the host plant.
To manage and prevent these infections, growers should follow these practices:
- Conducting regular sanitation pruning to remove dead or diseased wood.
- Applying protective wound sealants to any fresh cuts or mechanical injuries on the bark.
- Monitoring trees for early signs of fruiting bodies and removing them before spore release.
- Improving overall tree vitality through proper irrigation and soil nutrient management.
