Description

Symptoms

The first symptoms of infection appear as chlorotic spots, which over time take the form of concentric rings or curved lines on the surface of the leaf blade.

As the disease progresses, necrotic areas may appear on the leaves. Tissues in the affected areas gradually die off, leading to leaf deformation and premature leaf drop.

Infected plants exhibit a noticeable lag in growth and development rates. Flower stalks become shorter, and the number of buds significantly decreases, reducing the cultural value of the plant.

In some cases, symptoms may be masked by environmental stress, such as micronutrient deficiency or temperature fluctuations, which complicates visual diagnosis.

For accurate identification of the pathogen in laboratory conditions, methods such as Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) or Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) are used to detect the presence of viral protein or RNA.

Pathogen

The causative agent of the disease is the Pelargonium ring pattern virus, which belongs to the Pelarspovirus genus. This virus possesses a specific structure characteristic of phytopathogens that infect ornamental species of the Geraniaceae family.

This pathogen is systemic, meaning after infection, it spreads through all plant tissues via the vascular system. The virus is prone to long-term persistence within plant cells, making its management an extremely challenging task.

The primary hosts of the virus are plants of the genus Pelargonium. In greenhouse conditions and private collections, the disease can spread to related ornamental species during close contact.

Transmission of the infection occurs primarily through mechanical tissue damage. Tools used for pruning, taking cuttings, or repotting become the main vectors for transferring viral particles from infected to healthy plants.

A biological feature of the virus is its ability to remain hidden in stock plants, which may appear healthy externally but serve as a source of infection for all propagation material.

Conditions for development

Active spread of the infection in greenhouse operations directly correlates with plant density. Crowding promotes virus transmission during any mechanical contact.

The temperature regime in the facility influences the speed of symptom development. In favorable conditions for the pathogen, the disease manifests faster, especially under high air humidity.

Failure to observe sanitary standards when handling tools is a major risk factor. The virus retains infectious activity on the blades of knives, shears, and pruners for a long time after contact with an infected plant.

The presence of vectors like thrips or aphids, while not the primary transmission route for all strains of this virus, can contribute to the intensification of infection hotspots.

Poor disinfection protocols for substrates and containers during repotting also create conditions for the survival of viral particles, which may enter the soil with plant debris.

Why it matters

The harmfulness of the virus is expressed in the total loss of the commercial appearance of pelargoniums. Plants lose their ornamental value, become stunted, and are unsuitable for further sale or landscape design use.

Infected specimens become a permanent reservoir of infection in the collection. Even if a plant remains viable, it puts all neighboring healthy bushes at risk of infection.

Systemic infection leads to a general weakening of the plant's immune system, making it more vulnerable to secondary fungal and bacterial infections that often affect weakened tissues.

Economic losses consist of the need to cull a significant portion of stock material, costs for disinfection of facilities, and time losses during quarantine measures.

The lack of effective therapeutic treatments for plants already infected with the virus makes culling the only reliable method to protect the collection from total loss.

Protection

The primary control measure is the strict observance of phytosanitary rules. All suspicious or obviously infected plants must be immediately removed from the collection and destroyed by burning.

Using only healthy stock material is the basis of prevention. Purchasing seedlings should be done exclusively from certified nurseries that have phytosanitary control certificates.

Disinfection of tools after working with each individual plant is mandatory. For this purpose, 70% alcohol solution, chlorine-based products, or specialized disinfectants are used.

Regular inspection of plants for the appearance of ring patterns or leaf spots allows for early detection of infection hotspots, enabling containment and preventing the spread of the virus.

Organizing a quarantine for all newly arrived plants for 3-4 weeks allows for culling infected specimens before they are introduced into the general growing area.
