Description

Symptoms

Initial symptoms are characterized by the appearance of small, water-soaked spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand and turn brown or grayish, often showing concentric rings.

Chlorotic halos often develop around the lesions, indicating stress and the systemic response of the plant to the fungal toxins. This eventually leads to extensive leaf yellowing and necrosis.

A distinctive feature of this disease is the presence of greenish-black or dark sporodochia on the underside of the leaves or in the center of the necrotic spots, especially in humid conditions.

Stem infections manifest as elongated, dark lesions that can cause wilting and structural collapse of the plant. Premature leaf drop is a common consequence of heavy infection.

In advanced stages, the fungus may cause total decay of the affected plant tissues, leading to a blight-like appearance across the crop canopy.

Pathogen

Paramyrothecium foliicola is a microscopic fungus belonging to the order Hypocreales. It is widely recognized as a plant pathogen capable of infecting various foliage crops and ornamentals.

The fungus reproduces by forming conidia within specialized fruiting structures known as sporodochia. These structures are typically dark-colored and appear as small pustules on the infected surface.

Dispersal is primarily facilitated by water splashes, air currents, and contaminated agricultural tools. The pathogen is highly persistent, capable of surviving on plant debris and within the soil for extended periods.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on the environment. Warm temperatures between 20°C and 28°C and high relative humidity provide the ideal conditions for spore germination and colonization.

Once inside the host tissue, the fungus produces secondary metabolites that disrupt the plant's physiological functions, leading to cellular death and the formation of characteristic necrotic spots.

Why it matters

The pathogen causes significant economic loss by reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, which directly affects biomass accumulation and fruit development.

Infected crops often show stunted growth, lower vigor, and reduced yields. The quality of the harvested produce may also be severely compromised due to post-harvest decay.

Seedlings are particularly vulnerable; a high incidence of the disease can lead to damping-off and poor stand establishment, requiring extensive replanting.

Furthermore, the pathogen predisposes plants to opportunistic secondary infections by bacteria and other fungi, complicating the diagnosis and management of the crop health.

Large-scale outbreaks can result in severe yield reduction, especially in greenhouse environments where high humidity and temperature are difficult to manage.

Protection

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this disease. Sanitation is the first line of defense; removing and destroying all infected crop residues minimizes the inoculum load.

Crop rotation with non-host species is highly recommended to starve the pathogen and break its survival cycle in the field.

Chemical control using fungicides, particularly those containing copper or broad-spectrum systemic agents, is effective when applied preventively or at the first signs of symptoms.

Managing the greenhouse microclimate—specifically by lowering humidity levels and improving air circulation—is critical to hindering the development of the fungal sporodochia.
