Spiny mullein

Spiny mullein, scientifically known as Verbascum spinosum, is a perennial subshrub belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. Native exclusively to the island of Crete, it is a rare botanical species found in high-altitude rocky environments where it thrives in extreme conditions.

The plant is distinguished by its cushion-like growth habit and hardened, spine-tipped branches. This unique morphology is a structural adaptation to protect the plant from grazing animals and to reduce surface area against harsh, dehydrating winds common in its natural habitat.

To cultivate this species successfully, one must provide full sun exposure. It is highly photophilous and requires significant solar energy to maintain its compact, dense shape. Placing it in shaded or semi-shaded areas will lead to etiolation and a weakened physical structure.

Soil requirements are strict regarding drainage. It is best grown in lean, rocky, or gritty soil mixtures. Standard garden soil that holds water for prolonged periods is unsuitable for this species, as it rapidly causes root rot in the plant's delicate vascular system.

Regarding general maintenance, Verbascum spinosum is remarkably drought-tolerant. In a domestic garden setting, it requires very little intervention, essentially mimicking the minimal nutrient and moisture availability of its native Cretan limestone slopes throughout its growing season.
