Caucasian speedwell

Caucasian speedwell (Veronica caucasica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. It originates from the high-altitude mountainous regions of the Caucasus, where it thrives in rocky and well-ventilated conditions.

The plant requires well-drained, sandy, or loamy soils to prevent root saturation. It is highly valued for its ability to form dense carpets, making it an excellent candidate for alpine gardens and rock landscaping projects.

Botanical features include low-growing stems with dense foliage and distinctive inflorescences. While it prefers full sun for optimal bloom production, it can tolerate partial shade in regions with extremely high summer temperatures.

Cultivation practices involve regular but controlled watering to maintain soil moisture without causing waterlogging. It is a relatively hardy species that requires minimal intervention once established, provided it is planted in appropriate soil.

Maintenance tasks include occasional pruning after the main flowering period to encourage a second flush of flowers and to maintain the plant's compact growth habit. Fertilizer application should be moderate to avoid excessive leafy growth at the expense of blossoms.
