Aragon speedwell

Aragon speedwell (Veronica aragonensis) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. It is primarily recognized as a specialized botanical species native to the high-altitude regions of the Pyrenees, exhibiting specific adaptation to mountain ecosystems.

The cultural requirements for this species are centered on mimicking its natural lithophytic habitat. It thrives in stony, well-drained soils where mineral content is high and moisture accumulation is minimal, as the root system is susceptible to decay if kept in constantly waterlogged conditions.

In terms of light exposure, Veronica aragonensis requires full sun to maintain its compact growth habit and promote healthy flowering. Shade-heavy environments are detrimental to the plant, causing etiolation and reducing the overall vigor of the perennial clumps.

Regarding climate, the plant is adapted to endure harsh winters and cool, short growing seasons characteristic of alpine zones. It is not designed for tropical or high-humidity lowland climates, which makes its cultivation quite restricted to specific temperate and mountainous geographical regions.

Soil management for this plant involves maintaining a neutral to slightly alkaline pH level. Since the plant is naturally adapted to limestone outcrops, adding dolomite or crushed limestone to the cultivation medium is highly recommended to satisfy its metabolic and physiological needs for calcium.
