Smyrna fenugreek is a heat-loving crop, so sowing is performed exclusively after the soil temperature reaches 10–12°C. The optimal time for planting in temperate climates is the second half of April or early May.

Seeds are sown in rows with a spacing of about 30–40 cm to provide plants with enough space for growth. The planting depth is 2–3 cm, as deeper sowing may significantly delay germination.

To ensure uniform emergence, the soil must be moderately moist but not waterlogged to prevent seed rot. Seedlings typically appear 10–14 days after sowing under favorable temperature conditions.

In regions with long growing seasons, winter sowing is possible, but it requires autumn soil preparation and monitoring moisture levels during snowmelt. This approach allows for an earlier harvest of greens.

The seeding rate depends on soil fertility and averages 10–15 kg per hectare. In dense stands, plants may be more susceptible to fungal diseases due to poor air circulation.

Growing requirements

Smyrna fenugreek, a member of the Fabaceae family, has specific environmental requirements for high-quality production. The crop prefers well-lit areas, as shading leads to stem elongation and a decrease in the concentration of aromatic essential oils.

Soils for cultivation should be light, well-drained, and rich in organic matter. The crop performs best on sandy loam and loamy soils with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH, which is important for efficient nitrogen fixation.

The plant has moderate drought resistance but requires regular irrigation during active growth and flowering. Excess soil moisture can be fatal, making areas with high groundwater levels unsuitable for commercial cultivation.

The optimal temperature for growth ranges from 18–25°C. A sharp drop in temperature noticeably slows growth, which can lead to a decrease in the vegetative mass suitable for culinary use.

Agrotechnical practices include timely inter-row cultivation to prevent soil crusting. Controlling weeds in the early stages of development is also crucial, as fenugreek is highly sensitive to competition at the beginning of the season.

Yield

The yield of Smyrna fenugreek depends directly on soil management and harvesting times. Under favorable conditions, the green mass yield can reach 150–200 quintals per hectare with multiple harvests.

Maximum productivity is observed at the beginning of the flowering period, when the concentration of nutrients and aromatic compounds in the leaves is at its peak. Late harvesting leads to woody stems and loss of product quality.

When grown for seeds, yields typically range from 8 to 12 quintals per hectare. Seed crops require careful monitoring of the uniformity of pod ripening to minimize losses during threshing.

The application of mineral fertilizers, especially phosphorus-potassium complexes, helps improve yield and plant resilience. Nitrogen fertilizers are applied in small doses because the legume can fix its own nitrogen from the air.

Regular irrigation in dry years can increase biomass output by 20–30%. Farmers often apply micronutrients, such as boron and molybdenum, to improve pod formation.

Main diseases and pests

The main threats to Smyrna fenugreek are fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and root rot, which occur when humidity levels are not managed correctly or plant density is too high.

Root rot most often affects seedlings during cold, rainy springs, leading to gaps in the crop stand. Prevention involves strict crop rotation and seed treatment before planting.

Among pests, the greatest danger is posed by pea leaf weevils, which damage the root system and leaves in the early stages. In hot weather, aphids may appear, sucking juices from young shoots.

For pest control, biological protection methods are recommended, as the use of strong insecticides is limited by the short growing season and the consumption of the greens as food.

Timely weeding and ensuring optimal field ventilation significantly reduce the risk of infection. Infected plants should be removed from the field immediately to prevent the spread of pathogens.

Harvesting

Harvesting Smyrna fenugreek for greens begins before the phase of mass flowering. During this period, the plants have the most delicate aroma and juicy stems, which is highly valued in the food industry.

Mowing is carried out mechanically or by hand at a height of 5–7 cm above the soil surface. Depending on the region and growing conditions, two or three cuts per season are possible, provided there is sufficient irrigation.

For seed collection, harvesting begins when the pods turn a yellowish-brown color and become dry. It is important to harvest before the pods begin to shatter, which would lead to grain loss.

After harvesting, the green mass must be dried quickly in the shade or in dryers with active ventilation at a temperature not exceeding 40°C. Failure to control the temperature leads to the loss of essential oils and discoloration of the raw material.

Dried fenugreek should be stored in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry place. Adherence to harvesting and drying technology ensures the long-term preservation of the plant's aromatic and medicinal properties.
