Due to the hard seed coat typical of many wild legumes, seeds often require scarification prior to planting to break dormancy. A sowing depth of 3–4 cm is recommended to protect the embryo while ensuring it can emerge through the soil surface efficiently.

Cultivation should follow a row-cropping pattern with row spacing of 45–60 cm. This layout is crucial not only for mechanical weeding but also for providing adequate ventilation, which significantly reduces the risk of fungal outbreaks in the dense leaf canopy.

The seeding rate is typically calculated based on the specific germination percentage, targeting an establishment density of 60–80 plants per square meter. Over-seeding should be avoided to prevent intra-specific competition for nutrients and solar radiation.

As implied by its scientific name, Glycine arenaria is specialized for sandy, well-draining soils. It demonstrates remarkable adaptability to substrates with low organic matter content, where traditional agricultural crops would likely struggle due to nutrient deficiencies.

This species is highly photophilous and requires full sun exposure throughout the vegetative season. Any level of shading from neighboring vegetation or weeds can lead to etiolation, reduced biomass, and a significant drop in seed production potential.

The crop is adapted to a neutral to slightly acidic pH range. While it exhibits tolerance to varied soil chemistry, extreme alkalinity or acidity can disrupt the delicate balance of the nitrogen-fixing nodules, negatively impacting the plant's overall vigor.

Drought tolerance is one of the standout traits of this species. Its deep-reaching root system allows it to exploit moisture from deep soil horizons, enabling survival through hot and dry periods that would be lethal to more water-demanding legume varieties.

Temperature management is vital during the growing cycle, as the species is intolerant to frost. It flourishes in warm climates with consistent temperatures between 20°C and 28°C; high heat during the anthesis stage may require supplemental water to prevent flower abortion.

Main diseases and pests

Fungal pathogens represent the primary biological threat to Glycine arenaria, particularly in humid or stagnant air environments. Root rots and various types of foliar leaf spots can rapidly diminish the photosynthetic capacity of the plants if not monitored closely.

Insect pests such as bean pod borers and various aphids pose a significant risk to yield. Aphids are particularly problematic not just for direct sap-feeding, but also for their role as vectors for various plant viruses that cause stunted growth and chlorosis.

Weed management is the most labor-intensive part of early-stage agronomy. Because the seedlings grow relatively slowly, they are poor competitors against aggressive weeds. Mechanical cultivation or manual weeding in the inter-row spaces is necessary until the canopy closes.
