The Reini willow (Salix reinii) is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Salicaceae family. It is a subalpine species native to the mountainous regions of Japan and the Kuril Islands, where it exhibits excellent adaptation to harsh environments.
Botanically, it is recognized for its low-growing, spreading form, usually reaching heights of up to 2-3 meters. Its branches have a distinct reddish-brown tone, and its foliage is dense, making it a highly attractive choice for rock gardens and alpine-style landscaping.
Cultivation requires well-drained, moisture-retentive soils. Although Salix reinii thrives in damp conditions, it is sensitive to waterlogging, necessitating the installation of a drainage layer in heavier clay soils to prevent root asphyxiation.
The species requires full sun exposure to maintain its compact habit and vibrant leaf color. Partial shade may result in stunted growth and a less dense, leggy appearance that is undesirable for decorative purposes.
