Alloxylon wickhamii, commonly known as the Satin Oak or Tree Waratah, is a magnificent evergreen tree member of the Proteaceae family. It is native to the rainforests of Queensland, Australia, where it is prized for its brilliant red, brush-like flowers.
The cultivation of this species requires well-draining soil that is naturally low in phosphorus. Because it is highly sensitive to phosphorus toxicity, avoid standard commercial fertilizers and use only those specifically formulated for Proteaceae.
This tree thrives in tropical and warm subtropical environments and must be protected from frost. It prefers positions with filtered light or partial shade, especially when young, to prevent leaf scorching and desiccation.
Consistent soil moisture is vital for the establishment of young trees, but mature specimens require a balanced water regime. Ensuring that the planting site has excellent drainage is crucial to prevent root zone suffocation.
Mulching is a recommended agronomic practice to maintain soil temperature and moisture levels. A layer of organic matter should be applied around the base, ensuring it does not touch the main trunk to prevent collar rot.
