Native to the high altitudes of the European Alps, this species thrives in extreme environments. It is naturally adapted to rocky crevices where typical soil is absent, relying instead on mineral accumulation and moisture from snowmelt.
Successful cultivation requires a highly specialized mineral substrate. The ideal soil mixture consists of grit, coarse sand, and a small fraction of volcanic soil, ensuring rapid drainage and preventing any water stagnation around the crown.
The climate requirements include a preference for cool, airy conditions. In garden cultivation, it is crucial to protect the plant from excessive summer heat and prolonged humidity, which can easily trigger physiological decline.
