Smooth saffron (Crocus laevigatus) is a perennial bulbous herbaceous plant belonging to the Iridaceae family. Native to Greece and the Aegean islands, this species typically thrives in rocky terrains and open, sunny habitats.

The plant has a high requirement for light; it needs maximum exposure to direct sunlight throughout its entire growing season to ensure proper development and successful flowering.

It prefers well-drained, loose, and porous soil with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH. Waterlogging in the root zone is lethal for the bulbs, so in heavy clay soils, it is essential to construct raised beds amended with sand or gravel for better drainage.

Temperature management is critical for this species. While it is relatively heat-loving, the plant requires a distinct dormant period during the summer when the bulbs must remain in dry and warm soil conditions.

Cultivation practices involve moderate watering limited strictly to the active growth phases in autumn and early spring. Over-irrigation during the dormant period encourages rot and can lead to the total loss of the bulb stock.

Main diseases and pests

The primary pests affecting this crop are rodents, which may feed on the bulbs during the winter. Using protective mesh or repellent devices is highly recommended to secure the planting area.

Fungal diseases, such as gray mold (Botrytis) and Fusarium wilt, represent the most significant threats, usually resulting from excessive soil moisture or poor aeration. Crop rotation is essential to prevent these soil-borne pathogens.

Viral infections, including mosaic virus, can spread via aphids or contaminated gardening tools, causing petal deformation and a general decline in the plant's overall health and vigor.

To maintain plant health, regular monitoring is necessary to promptly remove any plants showing signs of rot or stress. Sanitary maintenance and bulb disinfection before planting are effective ways to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks.

Proper curing and drying of the bulbs after the growing cycle ends serve as the most critical agricultural technique to prevent the proliferation of pathogens during the dormancy period.
