The seeds should be covered with a thin layer of fine grit or vermiculite to maintain consistent moisture. Keeping the growing medium uniformly damp but not saturated is crucial during the germination phase.

Seedlings are sensitive to root disturbance and should be transplanted into individual containers as soon as they develop their first true leaves. Avoid using deep pots initially to prevent the soil from staying too wet.

Watering management is vital; while the plant enjoys regular moisture during the growing season, it is highly intolerant of waterlogged conditions, particularly during the winter dormancy period.

The ideal temperature for active growth ranges between 15°C and 25°C. As a plant from a Mediterranean-type climate, it prefers mild winters and requires protection in regions experiencing deep, sustained freezing temperatures.

Fertilization should be handled carefully, as Aristea is sensitive to high concentrations of minerals. A dilute, balanced fertilizer applied sparingly during the active growing phase is usually sufficient for optimal health.

Main diseases and pests

Root and crown rot are the primary threats to Aristea capitata. These issues are almost exclusively caused by excessive soil moisture and poor drainage, which invite soil-borne fungal pathogens.

Spider mites represent the most common pest pressure, especially in greenhouses or during prolonged hot and dry spells. They cause foliage discolouration and overall decline if not treated promptly with appropriate miticides.

Thrips may also infest the plant, targeting the developing flower buds and leaves. Frequent inspections of the plant's heart are recommended to catch infestations before they cause significant aesthetic damage.

Botrytis, or grey mould, can occur if there is insufficient air circulation around the plants or if water is left standing on the leaves overnight. Maintaining a clean growing environment is a key preventive measure.
