Sowing dates
Seeds of Ferocactus fordii are sown primarily during the spring period, as daylight hours begin to increase significantly. The optimal time is from late March to May, which provides young seedlings with sufficient natural lighting.
For sowing, use shallow trays with drainage holes filled with a light, breathable substrate based on sand and peat. The surface of the substrate must be sterilized to prevent mold growth.
The seeds are lightly pressed into the moistened soil without covering them with a thick layer, as they require light for germination. The containers are covered with glass or film to create a mini-greenhouse effect.
Germination occurs at a stable temperature in the range of 22–25 degrees Celsius. It is important to maintain constant humidity while avoiding waterlogging, which can lead to embryo rot.
Pricking out the seedlings is performed after the first spines appear, usually 3–6 months after sowing. Young plants require gradual acclimatization to dry air and bright sunlight.
Growing requirements
Ferocactus fordii belongs to the Cactaceae family and naturally grows in the harsh conditions of the Mexican deserts on the Baja California peninsula. This plant is characterized by a high demand for direct sunlight.
Cultivation requires a soil mixture that is as close as possible to rocky soils. An ideal composition consists of sod soil, leaf humus, and coarse sand or fine gravel in a 1:1:2 ratio.
The temperature regime during the growing season should be 25–30 degrees Celsius. During the winter dormancy period, the cactus requires cool conditions at about 10–12 degrees and almost no watering.
Watering must be moderate and strictly controlled; the substrate must dry out completely between waterings. Excessive moisture combined with low temperatures is detrimental to the root system.
The plant has a spherical shape with prominent ribs, on which powerful, often curved spines are located. Growth is slow, making it a valuable specimen for collector horticulture.
Main diseases and pests
The main threat to this species is root rot caused by substrate waterlogging or poor soil aeration. Affected tissues become soft and dark, requiring immediate repotting and the removal of dead root parts.
Among pests, the spider mite poses the greatest danger, settling in the recesses between the ribs. Infestation leads to characteristic light spots on the epidermis, and plant growth slows down.
Scale insects and mealybugs can also parasitize the cactus body, sucking sap from tender areas. To combat them, use systemic insecticides or wipe the plant with a soft brush dipped in alcohol solution.
Root mealybugs are hidden pests that damage roots underground. Signs of their presence include general plant weakness and a lack of growth during the spring season.
Disease prevention consists of regular room ventilation and adherence to a strict watering regime. High air humidity may lead to the development of fungal spotting on the epidermis.
