Description
Growing requirements
Roussea simplex is an evergreen climbing shrub that stands as the sole representative of its genus. This unique plant belongs to the family Campanulaceae, although it was historically categorized within its own distinct family, Rousseaceae.
The natural distribution of this species is strictly limited to the island of Mauritius. The plant inhabits inaccessible mountain ranges, favoring humid tropical forests and shaded areas characterized by a specific high-humidity microclimate.
For successful growth, the plant requires consistently high temperatures and significant air humidity. In its natural habitat, it thrives in loose, humus-rich soils packed with organic matter that retain moisture effectively while preventing waterlogging.
The plant features distinct morphology, including leathery opposite leaves and characteristic tubular orange-red flowers. Natural pollination is facilitated by endemic bird species, rendering the species' reproduction highly dependent on the stability of its native ecosystem.
Currently, Roussea simplex is not classified as an agricultural crop in any commercial sense. It is listed as a rare and endangered species, and its cultivation is strictly limited to botanical gardens for the purpose of genetic conservation.
