Propagation of Ongokea gore in its natural habitat occurs primarily through seeds. The fruits of the tree fall onto the forest floor, where, given favorable moisture levels, the seeds undergo a dormancy period before germination begins.

Under cultivated conditions or forest restoration projects, the seeds require pre-sowing stratification to enhance germination energy. Sowing is carried out in a well-drained substrate with a high content of organic matter.

The temperature regime for successful germination must remain stable within the range of 25–30 degrees Celsius. It is crucial to maintain constant yet moderate soil moisture, avoiding waterlogging, which can lead to embryo rot.

Young seedlings require shading during the first months of their life, as direct tropical sunlight can cause burns to the tender leaves. Transplantation to a permanent location is performed once the plant reaches a height of 30–50 centimeters.

Genetic diversity of the species is maintained through natural cross-pollination by insects, which complicates artificial breeding programs without strict control over tree isolation during the flowering season.

Growing requirements

Ongokea gore is a typical representative of the moist tropical forests of West Africa. The plant favors regions with high rainfall levels and the absence of a pronounced dry season.

The crop has specific soil requirements: the best growth indicators are observed in deep, fertile, well-aerated loams. The soil must possess a slightly acidic or neutral reaction.

An important development factor is the presence of an efficient drainage system in the soil horizon. The tree's root system is sensitive to prolonged waterlogging and water stagnation, which limits the scope of its natural distribution.

The plant is photophilous at maturity; however, in the juvenile stage, it can tolerate moderate shading under the primary forest canopy. The optimal elevation for growth is in lowland tropical zones.

Temperature fluctuations in its natural habitat are minimal; therefore, the tree possesses no resistance to low temperatures or sudden cold snaps, which can be fatal to the plant.

Yield

The primary value of the crop lies in its seeds, which contain a high percentage of fatty acids, specifically isanic acid. Harvesting is a labor-intensive process, as the trees often reach significant dimensions.

Yields from a single mature tree vary greatly depending on age, crown light exposure, and stand density. In the wild, the productivity of a single specimen can reach tens of kilograms of seeds.

The fruits are drupes that fall to the ground upon maturation. The harvesting process involves regular patrolling of forest plots or plantations and manual collection of the fallen fruits.

After collection, the fruits require cleaning from the fleshy pulp, which undergoes a fermentation process. The seeds are extracted, washed, and dried for subsequent transportation or oil extraction.

Industrial use of Ongokea oil is limited by its specific chemical composition, yet it finds applications as a component in specialized technical formulations, varnishes, and in the production of certain types of soaps.

Like many tropical trees, Ongokea is susceptible to infestation by various fungal pathogens that thrive in high humidity and temperature conditions.

Root rots are the most dangerous threats arising from poor soil drainage. These can lead to the gradual drying of the canopy and the ultimate death of the tree.

Pests, including various wood-boring beetles, can damage the wood and bark, weakening the plant's vitality. Regular monitoring of the trunks helps in timely detection of infestation hotspots.

Leaf-eating insects rarely cause critical damage to mature trees, but they can seriously slow the development of young seedlings in nurseries, reducing the crop's growth rates.

The anthropogenic factor—deforestation and changes to the natural ecosystem—is the primary threat to the species' population, leading to habitat fragmentation and a decline in genetic diversity.

Harvesting

The ripening period for Ongokea gore fruits depends on the specific regional climate but usually coincides with the end of the rainy season, which facilitates easier access to the trees in forest areas.

Harvesting takes place strictly after the fruits have naturally detached from the branches and fallen onto the forest floor. Immature fruits harvested from the tree do not possess the necessary concentration of oil.

To optimize collection, the area under the tree crowns is often cleared, allowing for the quick retrieval of fallen drupes and preventing spoilage by soil microorganisms.

Transportation of the collected raw materials must be carried out in well-ventilated sacks or containers to avoid overheating and the premature rancidity of fats within the seeds.
