Greenway's Euphorbia

Greenway's Euphorbia (Euphorbia greenwayi) is a striking succulent shrub belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family, native to the arid regions of Tanzania. It is highly valued for its architectural form and ability to thrive in harsh, dry environments.

This plant requires full sun exposure to maintain its compact growth habit. In indoor environments, placing it near a south-facing window is essential to ensure it receives sufficient light intensity throughout the day.

The soil must be extremely well-draining, similar to the rocky terrain of its native habitat. A mixture of pumice, coarse sand, and a small portion of organic potting soil is recommended for long-term health.

Watering requirements are minimal; the soil must be allowed to dry out completely between sessions. During the winter dormancy phase, water should be withheld almost entirely to prevent root rot.

Temperature management is critical: keep the plant between 20°C and 30°C during the growing season, and move to a cooler area (around 12–15°C) during winter to simulate its natural climate cycles.

The most significant threat to Euphorbia greenwayi is root rot caused by stagnant water in the root zone. Ensuring a high-quality drainage layer and appropriate potting mix is the best defense against this condition.

Mealybugs are common pests that hide in the crevices of the succulent stems. They are often difficult to detect until an infestation becomes significant, requiring careful inspection.

Spider mites may occasionally appear if the ambient air remains too dry and stagnant for extended periods. Increasing airflow or occasional light misting of the surrounding area can deter these pests.

In case of pest outbreak, specialized horticultural oils or systemic insecticides are effective if applied correctly. Avoid using heavy oils that might clog the plant's pores.

As with all members of the genus, the milky sap is toxic and irritating. Always wear gloves when pruning or repotting to prevent skin irritation and ensure the plant is out of reach for children and pets.
