Asarina

Description

Sowing dates

Asarina is a heat-loving crop, therefore in temperate climates, seeds are sown for seedlings at the end of February or in March.

The seeds of the plant are characterized by their small size, so they are sown superficially into a light, nutritious substrate without deep burial.

Containers with crops are covered with plastic film or glass, maintaining a temperature of about 20–22 degrees Celsius until the first shoots appear.

Seedling picking is carried out when the first pair of true leaves develops, using individual pots to preserve the root system.

Transplanting seedlings into open ground is planned only after the final threat of recurring frosts has passed, usually in early June.

Growing requirements

For successful growth, Asarina needs a sunny place protected from strong winds, as the crop is sensitive to drafts and cold.

The soil should be loose, fertile, and possess excellent drainage properties to prevent moisture stagnation at the roots.

The plant requires regular but moderate watering, especially during the period of active vegetative growth in the hot summer months.

An important element of agrotechnology is the installation of vertical supports such as nets, trellises, or strings for the stems to climb up.

To maintain decorative quality, systematic fertilization with complex mineral fertilizers is carried out every two weeks throughout the flowering period.

Main diseases and pests

The main pests of the crop are aphids and spider mites, which can quickly infest tender shoots and leaves if air humidity is insufficient.

When soil is overwatered or ventilation is poor, Asarina becomes vulnerable to powdery mildew, manifesting as a whitish coating on the foliage.

Root rot can occur due to excessive watering, leading to wilting and the subsequent death of the entire plant in a short time.

Prevention of diseases involves maintaining the watering schedule, regular ventilation of plantings, and keeping the surrounding area clean.

In case of detecting insect pests, it is necessary to immediately apply insecticides or acaricides, following the instructions for their safe use.
