When sowing in open ground, the soil should be warmed to at least 10–12 degrees Celsius. The seeds are small and require exposure to light, meaning they should be placed on the surface of the soil and lightly pressed rather than buried deeply.
Optimal planting spacing is set at 20–25 centimeters between individual plants. This distance is crucial for maintaining proper airflow around the base of the plant, which minimizes the risk of pathogens developing in dense foliage.
For a controlled start, greenhouse propagation in March is recommended. Seedlings are then transplanted to their final location once the risk of spring frost has completely passed, allowing them to establish a strong root system before the summer heat.
