How to tell it apart

Nuttall's waterweed (Elodea nuttallii) is a perennial submerged aquatic plant belonging to the Hydrocharitaceae family. It is often mistaken for the common Canadian waterweed but possesses distinct growth characteristics.

The plant features fragile, highly branched stems covered in narrow, bright green leaves arranged in whorls of three. The leaves are characteristically curved and become densely packed at the stem apex.

It exhibits aggressive vegetative reproduction. Small stem fragments with at least one node can survive and generate new colonies, making it extremely difficult to eradicate once established in a water body.

The root system is poorly developed as the plant derives its nutrients primarily from the water column through its leaves, which facilitates rapid colonization of nutrient-rich, eutrophic aquatic environments.

Flowering is infrequent in many regions. The small, three-petaled white flowers are produced on delicate stalks that allow them to reach the surface, serving as an identifying feature during the reproductive phase.

Where it grows

This species thrives in still or slow-moving freshwater environments, such as ponds, lakes, irrigation canals, and reservoirs. It shows high ecological plasticity and adapts well to various temperature regimes.

It prefers eutrophic waters where nitrogen and phosphorus levels are elevated. In such environments, the plant can quickly dominate, forming dense carpets that reach the water surface.

Artificial water systems, including irrigation networks, are prime habitats. The regular inflow of agricultural runoff provides the necessary nutrients for the species to proliferate rapidly and block water channels.

Dispersal is largely facilitated by human activity. Fragments are easily transported by boat propellers, fishing gear, and even the movement of ornamental aquatic plants into natural water bodies.

Once established, the species significantly alters the habitat by outcompeting native macrophytes, reducing biodiversity, and changing the physical and chemical properties of the water body.

Harm it causes

The primary impact of Nuttall's waterweed is the physical blockage of water flow. Dense mats significantly reduce the discharge capacity of irrigation channels, causing delays and inefficiencies in agricultural water delivery.

In water management systems, it clogs water intakes, pumps, and sluices, leading to frequent equipment failures and high operational costs for maintenance and cleaning of hydraulic infrastructure.

The mass accumulation of biomass leads to oxygen depletion during the night. Excessive respiration by the weed causes hypoxic conditions, which often result in localized fish kills and the loss of sensitive aquatic fauna.

As the vegetation dies, it adds significantly to the organic load on the bottom, accelerating siltation and contributing to the eutrophication of the pond or lake, rendering the water degraded.

Its presence hampers recreational activities. Dense vegetation makes swimming, boating, and fishing difficult, and can potentially increase the risk of drowning by entangling swimmers.

How to control

Mechanical harvesting is a common method, though it is labor-intensive. It is crucial to collect all plant debris, as even a small piece left behind can grow into a new, fully functional plant.

Agrotechnical management involves lowering water levels in canals during the winter. Desiccation and freezing are highly effective at reducing the population, as the plant is vulnerable to drying out.

Biological control methods, such as introducing grass carp, are utilized in some regions. These herbivorous fish can effectively graze down the weed biomass, keeping it at manageable levels without chemical input.

Chemical control via aquatic-safe herbicides is an option where local regulations permit. Such treatments require careful application to ensure that water quality for downstream use is not negatively impacted.
