Description
Mode of action
Trichoderma atrobrunneum strain ITEM 908 is a biological fungicide based on beneficial fungal antagonists. This strain acts as a biological shield in the rhizosphere, effectively colonizing the root environment to prevent the invasion of soil-borne pathogens.
The primary mechanism of action is mycoparasitism, where the fungus attacks and breaks down the cell walls of harmful pathogens using specialized enzymes like chitinase and glucanase. Furthermore, it secretes antibiotic compounds that inhibit the growth and development of competitive fungi and bacteria.
This strain also enhances systemic acquired resistance in crops. By interacting with the roots, it stimulates the plant's natural immune system, causing it to produce defense proteins that increase resilience against various diseases.
Beyond protection, Trichoderma ITEM 908 improves plant nutrient uptake by breaking down organic matter in the soil. This leads to a more robust root system and increased biomass, providing a combined effect of disease prevention and growth promotion.
As a biological agent, it persists in the soil environment for an extended period, creating a lasting barrier that provides ongoing protection throughout the critical phases of plant development.
What it targets
The strain is specifically targeted against soil-borne pathogens that cause root, stem, and seed rots. Major targets include species of Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, and Sclerotinia.
It is widely applied in both greenhouse and field conditions to protect vegetable crops, fruits, and cereals from damping-off, root rot, and vascular wilt diseases.
Rates and timing
Application rates are determined by the specific product formulation. Typically, it is applied through soil drenching, incorporation into the planting substrate, or seed treatment to ensure early colonization.
The most effective timing is during the early stages of plant growth, specifically at sowing or transplanting, to ensure the beneficial fungus dominates the root zone before pathogens establish themselves.
Restrictions
Care must be taken to avoid mixing with chemical fungicides, especially those with systemic action, as they can kill the beneficial Trichoderma spores. A safety interval of at least 7–10 days is recommended.
The efficacy of the strain depends on environmental conditions. It requires sufficient moisture and moderate soil temperatures to remain active; extreme drought or temperatures below 10°C will significantly limit its biocontrol potential.
