Mode of action

Trichoderma asperellum strain T-25 is a highly effective biological fungicide composed of antagonistic fungal microorganisms of the Trichoderma genus. This strain is widely used in modern sustainable agriculture as a safe alternative to chemical pesticides.

The mode of action is multifaceted, involving mycoparasitism, where the fungus T-25 directly attacks and digests the cell walls of harmful plant pathogens by secreting specialized hydrolytic enzymes like chitinases and cellulases.

In addition to direct parasitism, the strain competes aggressively for nutrients and space within the root zone, effectively excluding soil-borne pathogens and preventing them from colonizing the root system of host plants.

The fungus promotes plant health by stimulating the plant’s innate immune system, leading to induced systemic resistance. This allows crops to better defend themselves against a wide array of fungal and bacterial infections throughout the growing season.

T-25 also contributes to plant nutrition by solubilizing phosphorus and other microelements, which enhances root development and overall vegetative growth, particularly in early developmental stages.

What it targets

This strain is particularly effective in controlling soil-borne pathogens, including Fusarium spp., Pythium spp., Rhizoctonia solani, and Phytophthora species that cause severe root and crown rots.

It is widely applied in greenhouse and field vegetable production to manage foliar diseases, including powdery mildew, gray mold (Botrytis cinerea), and various types of leaf spots that thrive in humid environments.

The application of strain T-25 is effective for pulse crops, cereals, and ornamental plants, protecting them from damping-off and seedling blight by creating a protective zone around the seeds.

It is also used as a preventative measure to reduce the overall inoculum density in the soil, making it a critical tool for integrated pest management (IPM) in intensive crop cultivation.

Due to its high adaptability, the strain works well in diverse substrates and soil types, ensuring consistent control of pathogenic fungi across different agricultural ecosystems.

Rates and timing

Application rates for T-25 vary based on the target crop, the level of disease pressure, and the specific application method, such as seed treatment, soil drenching, or foliar spray.

For seed treatment, the inoculant is applied to ensure a uniform coating, which protects the seed during germination and prevents early-stage infection by soil-borne pathogens.

In irrigation systems, the preparation is diluted according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that the fungal spores are distributed evenly throughout the root zone for optimal protection.

Foliar sprays are best applied during cool, humid periods of the day, as high UV radiation can reduce the survival rate of the fungal spores upon application.

For optimal results, it is recommended to apply the product in regular cycles to maintain a stable population of the beneficial fungus in the crop's rhizosphere and phyllosphere.

Restrictions

The primary limitation is the compatibility with synthetic chemical fungicides; systemic chemicals often inhibit the growth of Trichoderma, therefore, a waiting period is required between chemical and biological applications.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role: extreme temperatures (below 10°C or above 30°C) and extreme drought can limit the metabolic activity and colonization efficiency of the strain.

The product should not be applied shortly after soil sterilization or heavy disinfection treatments, as these can kill the beneficial fungi and reduce the treatment's efficacy.

Proper storage is essential to maintain high titer levels of living spores, necessitating protection from extreme heat and direct sunlight to ensure long-term stability.

While the biological agent is safe, standard safety precautions should be followed to prevent eye contact or inhalation of concentrated dust during the preparation of spray solutions.
