Mode of action
Trichoderma asperellum is a group of beneficial soil-borne fungi that serve as highly effective biological control agents against a wide variety of plant pathogens.
The fungus acts by aggressively colonizing the rhizosphere and root surfaces, effectively outcompeting harmful pathogens for physical space and available nutrients.
It exerts direct antagonistic effects by producing enzymes that break down the cell walls of other fungi, essentially using them as a food source in a process known as mycoparasitism.
Additionally, these fungi secrete various bioactive compounds and secondary metabolites, including antibiotics, which inhibit the growth and development of pathogenic spores and mycelia.
Furthermore, their presence triggers induced systemic resistance in host plants, strengthening the plant's overall defense mechanism against diverse environmental stresses.
What it targets
These biological agents are widely employed to manage a broad range of agricultural diseases, primarily those originating from the soil or seed-borne infection sources.
They are particularly effective in protecting root systems and preventing the establishment of early-stage fungal diseases in various vegetable and broad-acre crops.
- Root and crown rot complexes (Fusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia).
- Foliar diseases such as powdery mildew and various leaf spots.
- Gray mold (Botrytis) on fruits and flowers in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Damping-off diseases during the sensitive seedling development phase.
The treatment is highly versatile, applicable for seed dressing, soil drenching, or foliar application depending on the specific disease pressure.
Rates and timing
Application rates vary based on the specific formulation, carrier, and the method of delivery, generally following the product label guidelines strictly.
For soil treatment, application via irrigation systems or direct injection into the seed furrow is common to establish a colony in the plant's immediate root zone.
Foliar sprays require thorough coverage of both leaf surfaces to ensure the fungus is present where pathogen infection is most likely to initiate.
Environmental conditions play a critical role; soil moisture and temperatures between 15°C and 25°C are ideal for the rapid colonization and activity of the fungi.
Repeated applications are often recommended to maintain a sufficient population density of the beneficial organism throughout the growing season.
Restrictions
The use of synthetic chemical fungicides, particularly broad-spectrum ones, is strictly incompatible with the application of biological agents as they will kill the beneficial fungi.
Direct exposure to intense UV radiation should be minimized, meaning field applications are most effective when conducted during late afternoon or early evening.
Suboptimal pH levels in the soil or substrate can hinder the growth and spore germination, requiring monitoring to ensure a suitable environment for the organism.
While generally considered low-risk, standard handling procedures, such as avoiding inhalation of spores and direct skin contact, should be followed during application.
Long-term storage of mixed solutions is not recommended as the metabolic activity of the living organisms leads to a rapid decline in efficacy over time.
