Mode of action

Soybean extract is a specialized group of plant-derived compounds used in modern agronomy as a biostimulant and bio-fungicide. These extracts are obtained from soybean biomass and are rich in bioactive molecules such as isoflavones, saponins, and unique peptides.

The primary mechanism of action is the induction of Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR). By applying the extract, the plant’s internal defense system is triggered, causing the plant to produce its own chitinases and defense proteins that prevent fungal penetration.

Additionally, soybean extract acts as an anti-metabolite to invading pathogens. The compounds within the extract disrupt the cell membrane integrity of fungal hyphae and bacterial cell walls, effectively neutralizing the threat on the leaf surface.

The extract also serves as a nutritional and protective biofilm. Once applied, the components create a protective layer that hinders the colonization of pathogens and reduces the impact of abiotic stress factors like heat or drought.

Prolonged efficacy is achieved through the synergy of various plant metabolites. Unlike synthetic chemicals, this extract provides a multi-target approach, making it difficult for pathogens to develop resistance over time.

What it targets

Soybean extract is mainly used to combat a variety of fungal diseases. It is particularly effective against powdery mildew, various types of rust, and downy mildew across a wide range of vegetable and cereal crops.

In terms of bacterial protection, the extract helps manage soft rots and bacterial spots. It reduces the disease pressure and slows down the rapid spread of infections, especially during humid weather conditions.

For pest management, the extract serves as a repellent. It is effective against small sucking insects like aphids, thrips, and spider mites by making the plant surface less appetizing and disrupting their feeding patterns.

Soil-borne pathogens can also be managed through seed treatment or soil drenching. This approach helps in preventing damping-off diseases and protecting the root zone during the most vulnerable initial growth stages.

Rates and timing

The application rate for soybean extract typically ranges from 2.0 to 5.0 liters per hectare, depending on the crop stage and the intensity of the disease pressure. For optimal coverage, a sufficient volume of water (200–400 L/ha) is necessary.

Timing is crucial for success. The first application should be preventative, initiated early in the growing season. Subsequent treatments should be spaced 7 to 10 days apart depending on the environmental conditions and disease progression.

The extract should be applied in the early morning or late evening. This ensures that the active biological compounds are not degraded by intense UV radiation, which could otherwise reduce their effectiveness significantly.

When preparing tank mixes, the extract should be added last. It is crucial to ensure that the water pH is neutral. Mixing with highly alkaline pesticides or fertilizers should be avoided to prevent precipitation and loss of stability.

Proper agitation of the spray solution is mandatory. Since the extract contains organic matter, uniform distribution in the spray tank is essential for consistent coverage and performance across the entire treated area.

Restrictions

Environmental limits play a significant role in efficacy. Avoid application if heavy rainfall is expected within 4-6 hours, as the extract can be washed off the leaves before it is absorbed or fully active on the leaf surface.

Temperature limitations apply during the application process. High temperatures exceeding +30°C can accelerate the degradation of delicate bioactive compounds and potentially reduce the residual effect on the plant.

While soybean extract is generally considered safe for humans and beneficial insects, standard protective gear is recommended during application. Proper handling prevents any unintended skin or respiratory irritation from concentrated formulations.

Storage requirements include maintaining a cool, dark environment. Exposure to direct sunlight or temperatures above +25°C for extended periods can cause the biological compounds to denature, rendering the product ineffective for future use.

Before widespread use, test the extract on a small, representative area of the crop. This ensures that there are no adverse sensitivity reactions, especially in delicate ornamental plants or specific sensitive cultivars.
