Mode of action

Ylang-ylang oil, extracted from the flowers of Cananga odorata, is classified as a botanical essential oil used in organic farming as a soft insecticide and repellent. Chemically, it is a complex mixture of terpenes, sesquiterpenes, and esters.

The mode of action is based on the physicochemical effects of volatile oil components on the insect's cuticle and respiratory system. Upon direct contact, the oil disrupts the wax layer of the pest's exoskeleton, leading to dehydration and death.

High concentrations of linalool and geraniol provide a strong repellent effect. These compounds interfere with the chemoreception of harmful insects, preventing them from locating host plants for feeding or egg-laying.

Products based on ylang-ylang oil have low persistence in the environment, as they evaporate quickly and are prone to photodegradation. This ensures that no toxic residues accumulate in the soil or produce.

Using ylang-ylang oil helps create an unfavorable environment for pest colonization without the need for synthetic toxins, supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

What it targets

The primary use of ylang-ylang oil in crop protection is for the control of small sucking pests, such as aphids, thrips, and various whitefly species. It is also effective in suppressing certain populations of spider mites.

Because of its repellent properties, the substance is widely used to protect vegetable crops and ornamental plants in both greenhouses and open fields, preventing pest infestations during early growth stages.

In addition to insecticidal action, ylang-ylang oil can inhibit the growth of certain fungal pathogens on leaf surfaces by suppressing spore germination, contributing to overall crop health.

The oil serves as an effective tool in integrated pest management (IPM) systems, where reducing the load of synthetic pesticides is a priority for growers and producers.

It is also recommended for use on flowers and nursery seedlings, where maintaining the aesthetic quality and avoiding chemical damage are crucial factors for commercial viability.

Rates and timing

Application rates for ylang-ylang oil preparations depend on the concentration of active ingredients in the specific commercial product. Emulsifiable concentrates are typically used, requiring dilution with water to form a stable mixture.

Applications should be carried out during the early morning or evening to avoid high solar activity, which helps reduce evaporation rates and ensures maximum effectiveness against target pests.

The frequency of treatment usually ranges from 3 to 5 applications per season, with intervals of 7–10 days. This regimen is necessary to target successive generations of pests that may hatch after the initial application.

In greenhouse conditions, proper ventilation must be managed to maintain a consistent concentration of volatile oil vapors, which is essential for effective pest control inside enclosed spaces.

Due to the natural nature of the product, pre-harvest intervals are minimal, allowing for treatments during the active fruiting phase of vegetable crops without compromising safety.

Restrictions

Excessive concentrations of the oil or application during peak sunlight may cause phytotoxicity. It is recommended to perform a spot test on a small group of plants before treating an entire crop area.

Care must be taken when preparing the working solution. Despite being a natural product, concentrated essential oils can cause irritation to the skin and mucous membranes of the operator.

Efficacy decreases significantly under high-wind conditions or high humidity due to the rapid loss of volatile compounds. Avoid application if rain is forecast, as it may wash the protective coating off the foliage.

Storage must be in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to prevent the oxidation of the oil's components and the loss of its biological activity.

While generally compatible with other biological agents, always conduct a physical compatibility test before mixing the oil with other pesticides to prevent precipitation or phase separation.
