Mode of action
Soybean oil is classified as a horticultural oil used as an insecticide and acaricide. It acts as an organic, non-toxic contact agent that provides an effective solution for managing pest populations in various crops.
The primary mode of action is purely physical rather than biochemical. Once applied, the oil forms a thin, sticky film over the insect or mite, which effectively suffocates the pest by blocking its spiracles, the tiny openings used for respiration.
Beyond suffocation, soybean oil disrupts the physiological processes of the pest, leading to rapid dehydration. It also interferes with the ability of pests to adhere to plant surfaces, effectively reducing their feeding and mobility.
Soybean oil is also highly effective against the eggs of many pest species. The oil penetrates the egg casing or seals it off, preventing gas exchange and successfully interrupting the pest's life cycle before they emerge.
As a contact-only treatment, it does not leave systemic residues in plant tissues. This makes it a preferred option for late-season applications where harvest intervals for synthetic pesticides are a concern.
What it targets
Soybean oil is best utilized against soft-bodied pests that reside on the surface of foliage, stems, or fruits. It is widely used in both field crops and greenhouse production systems.
Key target pests include:
- Two-spotted spider mites and other tetranychid mites.
- Various species of aphids that colonize tender plant growth.
- Whiteflies, particularly in controlled-environment agriculture.
- Mealybugs and scale insects during their mobile, juvenile stages.
- Small larvae of various lepidopteran pests and mite eggs.
Rates and timing
The success of soybean oil applications relies heavily on proper dilution. Typically, emulsions are prepared at a concentration ranging from 1% to 2%, ensuring that the oil is adequately emulsified in water before spraying.
Coverage is critical for efficacy because the oil must physically contact the pest. Low-volume or high-volume sprays should be adjusted to achieve thorough wetting of both the upper and lower leaf surfaces.
Timing the application is essential to avoid plant stress. Spraying should be done during cool periods of the day, preferably early morning or evening, to prevent foliage phytotoxicity under high solar radiation.
Frequency of treatment is determined by the pest pressure and the egg-hatching cycles. Repeated applications every 7 to 14 days are common practice to manage subsequent generations of pests.
Compatibility with other pesticides should always be verified. While oil can act as a spreader-sticker for other products, combining it with certain fungicides or herbicides may increase the risk of leaf burn.
Restrictions
Phytotoxicity is the main limiting factor. Plants under water stress or those exposed to temperatures exceeding 30°C (86°F) are at a higher risk of suffering from oil-induced damage to their stomata and overall metabolism.
Care should be taken when applying on plants with waxy or sensitive foliage, as certain species may react poorly to prolonged exposure to oil-based films. Always perform a small-scale patch test before widespread use.
Quality of the water used for mixing is important. Hard water can break the emulsion, leading to uneven distribution of the oil droplets, which reduces the overall effectiveness of the treatment.
Storage of the concentrate is sensitive to environmental conditions. Avoid exposing containers to extreme heat or freezing temperatures to maintain the stability of the emulsifying agents within the oil product.
Avoid applications immediately before predicted rainfall. Rain can wash the oil film off the leaves before it has had sufficient time to exert its lethal effect on the target pests.
