Description
Mode of action
Paraffin oil belongs to the group of mineral oils and acts as a contact insecticide and acaricide. Its primary mechanism of action involves the physical suffocation of pests by covering their respiratory systems.
Once applied to the pest's surface or egg masses, the substance forms a thin oil film. This film prevents gas exchange, leading to the rapid death of the pest through asphyxiation.
Beyond suffocation, the oil effectively damages the chitinous exoskeleton of larvae and dissolves the protective waxy coatings that many insects use to defend themselves against other chemical pesticides.
A key advantage of paraffin oil is that pests cannot develop resistance to it. This property makes it an essential tool for integrated pest management and anti-resistance strategies in agriculture.
The efficacy of the treatment depends heavily on thorough coverage. Because the mode of action is purely contact-based, the spray must be applied evenly to all plant surfaces, including cracks in the bark.
What it targets
Paraffin oil is effective against a broad range of overwintering and active pests. Its main targets include scale insects, soft scales, mealybugs, and various species of mites.
The product is also used for controlling aphids, whiteflies, and psyllids during their periods of high activity. It is highly effective at destroying pest eggs laid on tree bark or stems.
It is widely utilized in intensive orchard management for pome and stone fruits, as well as on citrus crops and various ornamental shrubs for cleaning the canopy.
In viticulture, paraffin oil is applied to suppress mite populations that overwinter under bud scales, significantly reducing the initial pest pressure before the growing season begins.
Due to its relatively gentle nature toward the plant, it can be applied to sensitive crops without causing phytotoxicity, provided the recommended dosage is strictly observed.
Rates and timing
Application rates depend on the crop's growth stage and the targeted pest. Early spring applications on dormant buds typically require higher concentrations, usually ranging from 1% to 3%.
During the growing season, lower concentrations (0.5–1%) are used to prevent oil burns on leaves, which can occur under high temperatures and strong direct sunlight.
A mandatory requirement for success is exhaustive spraying, ensuring the working solution reaches all plant parts and penetrates hidden areas where pests may reside.
Applications should be avoided on very hot days when temperatures exceed 25°C, as the risk of damaging young plant tissues with the oil layer is significantly higher.
The intervals between treatments are adjusted based on the severity of infestation and environmental factors, typically ranging from 10 to 14 days for effective management.
Restrictions
The main limitation is the prohibition of mixing with sulfur-based products or captan, as these combinations can trigger chemical reactions leading to severe plant phytotoxicity.
Do not apply oil to plants under stress from drought or waterlogging, as the oil film can temporarily inhibit transpiration and respiration processes, further weakening the plant.
When preparing tank mixes, it is essential to verify compatibility with all other components to avoid sedimentation or the breakdown of the emulsion, which reduces spray performance.
Avoid direct application to flowering plants, as the oil film can be lethal to bees and other beneficial pollinators, disrupting their natural cycles and ecological roles.
Store the product in a tightly sealed container at a stable temperature, avoiding both freezing and excessive heat, which can lead to the separation of the emulsion and loss of effectiveness.
