Once the spores adhere to the surface of the pest, they germinate under favorable conditions. The fungus produces specialized enzymes, including chitinases and proteases, which chemically degrade the insect's protective cuticle layer.
After penetration, the fungal hyphae proliferate inside the host's hemocoel, absorbing nutrients and destroying internal tissues. This process is supplemented by the production of toxic metabolites that lead to physiological collapse.
The insect host eventually dies as a result of systemic infection and tissue necrosis. The speed of mortality depends on the species of the pest, the environmental conditions, and the concentration of the initial inoculum.
Post-mortem, the fungus emerges through the joints and body segments to produce a new crop of conidia. This sporulation facilitates secondary spread among the pest population, providing sustained biological control.
