Mode of action

Trichoderma atroviride strain T11 is a powerful biological fungicide that relies on beneficial fungal mechanisms to protect crops. It functions primarily as a potent antagonist in the rhizosphere, outcompeting harmful pathogens for nutrients and space.

The core mechanism of action involves the production of hydrolytic enzymes, such as chitinases and cellulases. These enzymes degrade the cell walls of pathogenic fungi, effectively neutralizing them through a process known as mycoparasitism.

Furthermore, strain T11 acts as an inducer of systemic resistance in plants. By interacting with the roots, it stimulates the plant's natural defense pathways, making crops more resilient to future infections.

The fungus produces various metabolites that promote root growth and improve nutrient uptake. This dual action ensures that plants are not only protected from disease but also achieve better vigor and growth.

Its ability to rapidly colonize various soil substrates gives it a significant competitive advantage. This rapid colonization prevents pathogenic fungi from establishing themselves in the root zone.

What it targets

This strain is widely used to manage soil-borne diseases including root rot, stem rot, and damping-off. It is highly effective against major pathogens like Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, and Phytophthora.

It provides significant control against Botrytis cinerea, which is responsible for grey mold in both greenhouse and field-grown vegetable and fruit crops.

T11 is commonly applied in the production of high-value crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and ornamental plants to ensure healthy root systems during the early stages of development.

It is also useful for post-harvest soil treatment to break down infected crop residues and reduce the overall inoculum density in the field for the next growing season.

Regular use helps suppress mildews and other aerial pathogens when applied as part of an integrated disease management program.

Rates and timing

Application rates vary depending on the formulation and the crop being treated. For seed treatment, specific concentrations are used to ensure the spores adequately coat the seed surface for early protection.

In irrigation systems, such as drip lines, the dosage is calculated based on water volume to ensure uniform distribution within the root zone throughout the crop's lifecycle.

Seedling dip applications are recommended during transplanting to provide an immediate biological shield to the root system when it is most vulnerable to shock and infection.

Foliar sprays should be applied in the evening to protect the spores from UV degradation, which can significantly reduce their efficacy if applied during peak sunlight.

For most crops, a preventive application schedule with intervals of 10–14 days is recommended to maintain a sufficient population density of the beneficial fungus in the soil.

Restrictions

It is strictly prohibited to mix this product with systemic chemical fungicides, as they will eliminate the beneficial Trichoderma spores, rendering the application useless.

Environmental conditions are crucial. Extreme soil pH levels or prolonged periods of drought can hinder the development and colonization rate of the fungus.

Proper storage is essential to maintain product viability. The product should be kept in a cool, dark place, avoiding temperatures that could compromise the stability of the biological active ingredient.

Effective colonization requires adequate soil moisture; therefore, the product's performance is optimized when used in combination with standard irrigation practices.

Always follow personal safety guidelines when handling. While considered non-toxic to humans, avoid direct inhalation of powders and ensure thorough handwashing after application.
