Mode of action

Nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) is a group of baculoviruses that serve as specific biological agents for controlling various lepidopteran pest species.

The mode of action is triggered when the larvae ingest the virus particles while feeding on the surface of treated plant leaves.

Once inside the insect's midgut, the viral particles are released, penetrate the epithelial cells, and begin rapid replication within the host tissues.

The infection causes the larvae to stop feeding almost immediately, which significantly reduces crop damage even before the pest dies.

As the infection progresses, the larvae die, and the virus is released back into the environment, potentially spreading naturally to other larvae in the field.

What it targets

The primary target of this biological insecticide is the Egyptian cotton leafworm (Spodoptera littoralis) across its various larval instars.

Younger larval stages are generally more susceptible, making timely application crucial for preventing widespread damage to the crop foliage.

It is widely utilized in the production of vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, as well as field crops like cotton and maize.

Because the virus is highly host-specific, it does not harm beneficial insects, parasitoids, predators, or other non-target organisms in the field.

This selectivity makes it an excellent tool for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and organic agricultural practices globally.

Rates and timing

Application rates are determined by the severity of the pest infestation and the specific commercial formulation of the biological product.

The timing of the application is critical; it should coincide with the peak egg-hatch period to ensure the larvae ingest the virus early.

High-quality spray coverage is essential, as the virus must be ingested to be effective, requiring thorough application over all plant parts.

Applications should be performed during low-light conditions, such as late evening or early morning, to minimize UV degradation of the virus.

Regular monitoring of pest levels is necessary to decide if follow-up applications are required, typically every week under high pressure.

Restrictions

The main limitation of NPV-based products is their sensitivity to solar radiation; UV rays can quickly deactivate viral particles on the leaf surface.

Product performance can be influenced by the pH of the water used in the tank mix, as extreme acidity or alkalinity may damage the virus.

The virus has a narrow host range and will not provide control against other types of pests, necessitating a broader strategy for mixed infestations.

Proper storage is required; the product should be kept in cool, dark environments to ensure the biological activity of the virus remains high over time.

While safe for non-target species, standard handling precautions should be taken to ensure the safety of the applicator during preparation and spraying.
