Tall oil

Description

Mode of action

Tall oil is a complex mixture of resin acids, fatty acids, and neutral substances obtained as a byproduct of the wood pulp industry. In agronomy, it is widely utilized not as a standalone pesticide, but as a high-performance adjuvant and surfactant.

Its primary mechanism of action is the significant reduction of the surface tension of spray solutions. By decreasing the contact angle, it allows droplets to spread uniformly across plant surfaces, particularly waxy leaves that otherwise repel water-based sprays.

The chemical composition of tall oil enhances the permeability of plant cuticles, facilitating the penetration of systemic active ingredients. This ensures that herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides are effectively absorbed into the target tissues.

Tall oil provides essential rainfastness properties. Once the spray has dried on the plant surface, it creates a durable barrier that protects the active ingredients from being washed away by unexpected rainfall or heavy dew.

Furthermore, it stabilizes the active ingredients against evaporation under hot and dry field conditions. This ensures that the applied dosage reaches the target organism effectively, reducing the need for repeated spraying and minimizing environmental impact.

What it targets

Tall oil is predominantly used to improve the efficacy of herbicides when targeting broadleaf weeds and grasses with dense foliage. It is highly effective on crops like cereals and oilseeds that possess natural protective waxy coatings.

In fungicide programs, it is used to achieve better coverage of leaves and stems. This is crucial for managing diseases like powdery mildew, rusts, and various leaf spot pathogens that thrive in dense canopies.

For insecticides, tall oil improves the spread and penetration into tight spaces such as leaf axils, flower buds, and leaf undersides, where pests like aphids and mites often hide and multiply.

It is also commonly utilized in desiccant tank mixes during the harvest stage. Improved coverage ensures uniform drying of the crop, which contributes to higher quality yields and more efficient mechanical harvesting.

Additionally, it serves as a carrier for foliar-applied micronutrients. By ensuring that the leaf surface remains adequately coated, tall oil promotes maximum absorption of minerals, preventing nutrient deficiencies during critical growth stages.

Rates and timing

The application rate for tall oil-based adjuvants typically ranges from 0.05% to 0.3% of the total spray volume. The exact concentration is determined by the specific pesticide being used and the water quality of the region.

Always follow the order of mixing: fill the tank with water, add the pesticide or fertilizer, and add the tall oil adjuvant last while the agitator is running to ensure a consistent and stable emulsion.

It is recommended to conduct spraying during early morning or late evening to avoid rapid evaporation and potential phytotoxicity. Optimal temperatures are generally below 25°C to ensure the spray stays effective on the leaf surface.

In regions with hard water, the efficacy of surfactants can be altered. If the spray water is particularly alkaline or hard, consider using a water conditioner in combination with the tall oil to maintain the stability of the mixture.

Perform a jar test before tank-mixing multiple products. This simple check ensures that the combination of tall oil, pesticides, and other chemicals does not result in the formation of precipitates that could clog nozzles.

Restrictions

One critical limitation is the risk of phytotoxicity on sensitive young crops if the concentration of the adjuvant exceeds the recommended levels. Always consult the label of the main pesticide for specific surfactant restrictions.

Avoid applying sprays if heavy rainfall is forecasted within a few hours. Although tall oil improves rainfastness, it requires some time to set and dry on the leaf surface to provide optimal protection against washing off.

When using pesticides that are toxic to pollinators, special care must be taken. Adjuvants like tall oil can increase the absorption and residual effect of insecticides, which may raise the risk to bees and other beneficial insects.

Store tall oil-based products in their original, sealed containers in a cool, dry place. Exposure to extreme heat or direct sunlight can degrade the chemical properties of the resin acids and reduce their effectiveness over time.

Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling concentrates. Even though tall oil is derived from natural sources, the concentrated form can cause skin and eye irritation if handled improperly.
