Pyriofenone

Description

Mode of action

Pyriofenone belongs to the chemical class of benzoylpyridines and is a specialized fungicide. Its primary purpose is the effective control of pathogens causing powdery mildew on various agricultural crops.

The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of appressorium formation and mycelial growth of pathogenic fungi. Pyriofenone disrupts fungal development at the earliest stages, preventing the infection from establishing itself on the leaf epidermis.

The active ingredient exhibits strong preventive and curative activity. It is capable of inhibiting spore formation, which significantly reduces the risk of secondary infections in healthy plant tissues throughout the growing season.

Pyriofenone demonstrates high resistance to wash-off by precipitation, providing a prolonged protective period. This quality allows it to maintain a reliable barrier on leaf surfaces even in variable weather conditions.

Unlike many other fungicides, pyriofenone targets specific processes within the pathogen, without inducing cross-resistance in fungi that are resistant to triazoles or strobilurins.

What it targets

This active ingredient is highly specialized and is used primarily against pathogens of the powdery mildew family (Erysiphaceae). It is extremely effective against a wide range of fungal species that infest vegetable, fruit, and industrial crops.

The primary targets include powdery mildew pathogens on cucumber, tomato, grapes, as well as apple and other fruit trees. The substance successfully controls infections caused by Erysiphe, Podosphaera, and Uncinula species.

Rates and timing

Application timing is determined by the phytosanitary condition of the field and the crop growth stage. Preventive application before the appearance of initial disease symptoms or upon the detection of the first few powdery mildew spots is considered optimal.

Application rates vary depending on the crop type and the severity of the disease pressure. When working with pyriofenone-based products, it is crucial to adhere to application frequency limits to prevent the development of pathogen resistance.

Restrictions

When handling pyriofenone, contact of working solutions with skin and mucous membranes must be avoided. The use of standard personal protective equipment, including gloves, goggles, respirators, and protective clothing, is mandatory.

The substance requires adherence to sanitary zones when applied near water bodies and apiaries. Despite its relative safety to beneficial insects, direct application during periods of active bee foraging should be avoided.
