Description
Mode of action
Petroleum oils, often referred to as horticultural or spray oils, are widely utilized in plant protection as effective contact insecticides and acaricides. Their primary mode of action is purely physical rather than chemical.
Upon application, the oil forms a thin film over the surface of the plant, which coats the bodies of insects and mites. This film mechanically blocks their respiratory openings (spiracles), leading to asphyxiation and death.
Beyond affecting mobile stages of pests, these oils are highly effective against eggs. The oil film disrupts the gas exchange required for embryonic development, preventing eggs from hatching effectively.
A significant advantage of this physical mode of action is the lack of resistance development in pest populations. Unlike traditional synthetic insecticides, pests cannot easily evolve biological resistance to suffocation.
Additionally, petroleum oils can provide a suppressive effect against certain fungal pathogens by creating a physical barrier that prevents spores from germinating and colonizing the leaf surface.
What it targets
Petroleum oils are specifically targeted at pests that possess protective shells or waxy layers. Scale insects and mealybugs are the primary targets, as their physical defenses are ineffective against the suffocating action of oil.
These products are extremely effective against various species of mites, such as spider mites and eriophyid mites, which can cause significant economic losses in orchards and ornamental plantings.
They are also utilized to control aphids, whiteflies, and psyllids. Their contact nature makes them a rapid-response solution for managing outbreaks in greenhouses and field conditions.
Furthermore, dormant-season applications are commonly used to target the overwintering eggs of various lepidopteran and hemipteran pests, significantly reducing the initial pest pressure in spring.

Rates and timing
Application rates for petroleum oils depend heavily on the plant's growth stage. During the dormant season, higher concentrations can be safely applied to woody structures without damaging the plant.
During the active growing season, much lower concentrations must be used to minimize the risk of phytotoxicity, such as leaf burn or interference with plant respiration and transpiration.
The timing of applications is crucial; it should coincide with the emergence of vulnerable stages, such as scale crawlers or mite activity, to ensure maximum control efficiency.
Thorough coverage is essential for success. Since the product only works through direct contact, any part of the plant left unexposed to the spray allows pests to survive.
It is important to monitor weather conditions before application. Spraying should be avoided when temperatures exceed 25-30°C to prevent potential damage to sensitive leaf tissue caused by the oil film.
Restrictions
A critical limitation is the incompatibility with sulfur-based fungicides. A safety interval of at least 2 to 3 weeks must be observed between applications of oil and sulfur to prevent severe plant injury.
Petroleum oils should not be applied to plants experiencing water stress or drought, as the coating can interfere with the plant's natural ability to regulate water loss, potentially causing leaf drop.
Do not apply oils when freezing temperatures are expected. Sudden drops in temperature can cause the oil to harden or persist too long on the plant, leading to cell necrosis and systemic stress.
Because these oils do not have systemic properties, they provide no residual protection for new plant growth. Consequently, multiple applications may be necessary as the crop continues to grow.
Avoid applying oil sprays during the blooming period, as this can adversely affect flower development, potentially causing petal damage and impacting pollination success.
