Mode of action

Paraffin oils are highly refined petroleum fractions classified as contact-action plant protection products with a broad spectrum of utility.

Their mechanism of action against pests is primarily physical rather than chemical, which significantly reduces the risk of resistance development.

Upon application, the oil forms a thin, dense film that coats the surface of the plant and completely envelopes the pest, blocking its respiratory pores (tracheae).

As a result of oxygen deprivation, the insect or mite quickly perishes from asphyxiation, making the product effective across various life stages.

Additionally, the oil film hinders the movement of pests, prevents feeding, and can disrupt the egg-laying processes of various harmful species.

What it targets

Paraffin oil products serve as effective insecticide-acaricides for controlling a wide range of overwintering and active pest populations.

The primary targets for treatment include scale insects, mealybugs, various mites (such as the European red mite), and diverse aphid species.

These preparations are also successfully deployed to manage psyllids and other soft-bodied insects that infest perennial crops.

The smothering effect of the oil effectively suppresses the development of larvae and egg masses hidden within tree bark cracks or bud scales.

Rates and timing

The application rates for paraffin oils depend heavily on the plant's phenological stage and the specific equipment used for spraying.

During the dormant season, prior to bud burst, higher concentrations are generally permissible as the bark is less sensitive to phytotoxicity.

During the active growing season, lower concentrations must be used to prevent leaf surface burns, especially under high ambient temperatures.

A critical condition for success is thorough and uniform coverage of the entire plant, including the undersides of branches and trunks.

Optimal timing is determined by monitoring pest population dynamics and considering local weather forecasts for the days following application.

Restrictions

Application is not recommended at temperatures exceeding 25–28 degrees Celsius, as this significantly increases the risk of phytotoxicity.

It is strictly prohibited to mix paraffin oils with sulfur-based products or captan, as this combination can cause severe chemical burns to foliage.

A mandatory interval of at least 2–3 weeks should be maintained between the application of paraffin oil and other pesticide treatments.

Treatments during active flowering should be avoided, as the oil film may negatively impact pollination processes and the integrity of blooms.

Personal protective equipment must be worn during handling to prevent skin and eye contact with the concentrated product.
