Mode of action
Paraffin oil belongs to the group of highly refined mineral oils used as contact insecticides, acaricides, and ovicides in agriculture. Its mode of action is physical rather than chemical.
Upon contact with the pest, the oil forms a thin film that covers the spiracles or respiratory pores of insects and mites. This leads to suffocation and subsequent death of the target organisms.
The oil also interferes with the water balance of the pest, preventing moisture loss or intake, which is lethal to eggs and immature stages. This mechanism ensures that pests do not develop resistance.
Additionally, the coating of the oil can mask pheromone signals, disrupting the mating process of pests. This makes it a highly effective tool for integrated pest management programs.
Paraffin oil is considered environmentally friendly as it leaves minimal toxic residues, allowing for safe application in professional horticulture and fruit orchards.
What it targets
Paraffin oil is primarily used to control overwintering stages of various pests. It is highly effective against scale insects, mealybugs, aphids, whiteflies, and various spider mites.
The product is especially valuable for targeting dormant stages hidden in tree bark crevices. It effectively eliminates egg clusters, reducing pest pressure for the upcoming growing season.
Rates and timing
The standard application time is early spring during the dormant phase, before bud break. The temperature should be above 5°C to ensure proper viscosity and coverage of the oil film.
The dilution rate typically ranges from 1% to 3% depending on the target pest and the crop type. Full coverage is essential, as the oil must physically coat the pest to be effective.
For applications during the growing season, lower concentrations must be used to minimize the risk of phytotoxicity. Applications should be performed in the early morning or late evening.
Restrictions
A primary limitation is the risk of phytotoxicity. Application during temperatures exceeding 25°C can cause leaf scorch, as the oil film may interfere with the plant's transpiration and respiration.
Paraffin oil should never be tank-mixed with sulfur-based products or captan. A minimum interval of 30 days is required between applications of these incompatible substances to prevent plant damage.
Avoid applying the oil to drought-stressed or otherwise weak plants, as they are more susceptible to injury. Always perform a small-scale compatibility test before mixing with other agrochemicals.
Storage conditions are critical; keep the product away from extreme heat and freezing temperatures, which can destabilize the oil emulsion and render it ineffective.
Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment to avoid inhalation of the oil mist, which can cause respiratory irritation and discomfort.
