Mode of action

Paraffin oils are widely used in agriculture as effective insecticides and acaricides that function through physical contact rather than systemic action.

The primary mode of action is the formation of a fine, uniform oil film that covers the surface of pests, their larvae, and their eggs upon contact.

By coating the insect, the oil physically blocks the spiracles, which are the breathing pores through which insects take in oxygen, leading to death by suffocation.

This physical mode of action is particularly valuable in integrated pest management (IPM) because pests are unable to develop resistance to this method of control.

Furthermore, the film disrupts the gas exchange required for embryo development in eggs, effectively preventing the hatching of the next generation of pests.

What it targets

Paraffin oils are highly effective against a wide range of overwintering pests that hibernate in the bark or on the branches of fruit trees and shrubs.

Target pests include various species of scale insects, mealybugs, aphids, spider mites, leafrollers, and psyllids that cause significant crop damage.

The application of these oils is a standard practice for managing mite populations, particularly the European red mite, during dormant or early season phases.

Beyond insect control, these oils provide secondary benefits by creating a barrier that can inhibit the settlement and spread of certain fungal spores on plant surfaces.

Their versatility makes them suitable for use in orchards, vineyards, and ornamental gardens, providing a broad-spectrum protective effect during critical developmental stages.

Rates and timing

The timing of application is crucial, with dormant or early spring treatments being the most common strategy to eliminate pests before the growing season starts.

Application rates generally range between 1% to 3% concentration of the emulsion in water, depending on the pest pressure and the crop's sensitivity.

Thorough coverage is essential because the oil only affects the pests that are directly contacted by the spray; therefore, high-volume spraying is usually recommended.

It is vital to monitor environmental conditions closely, as applying oil during periods of high heat or freezing temperatures can cause damage to plant tissues.

Modern refined oils are designed to be safe for plants if applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions regarding specific phenological stages.

Restrictions

A major restriction when using paraffin oil is its incompatibility with sulfur-containing products and certain fungicides, which can lead to severe phytotoxicity.

Always maintain a safety interval of at least 2 to 3 weeks between applying paraffin oil and other chemical plant protection products to avoid unintended reactions.

Do not apply the product to plants that are under water or heat stress, as they lack the vigor to recover if minor phytotoxic effects occur on the foliage.

Avoid application during the peak blooming period, as oil deposits can interfere with pollination and potentially damage the sensitive floral tissues.
