Mode of action

Paraffin oils belong to the mineral oil group, derived from highly refined petroleum fractions. These substances are widely used in agriculture due to their efficiency and relatively low environmental impact compared to synthetic pesticides.

The primary mode of action is physical rather than chemical. When applied to the plant, the oil creates a thin film that covers the surface of the pest, whether it is an egg, larva, or adult insect.

This film blocks the spiracles (breathing pores) of the insects and mites, causing them to suffocate. This physical process makes it impossible for pests to develop resistance, which is a major advantage over traditional chemical agents.

Furthermore, the oil interferes with the feeding and egg-laying processes of pests. By coating the plant surface, it creates an unsuitable environment for colonization, offering a prophylactic effect against future infestations.

In addition to its direct effect, paraffin oil serves as an effective adjuvant in tank mixtures, enhancing the distribution and penetration of other active substances into the target pests' cuticles.

What it targets

Paraffin oils are classified as contact insecticide-acaricides. They are particularly effective against pests that are difficult to reach with systemic pesticides due to their protective shells or dormant habits.

Key pests targeted by paraffin oil include:

  • Scale insects and mealybugs, which are protected by their tough, waxy or armored shells.
  • Spider mites and gall mites at various life stages, including overwintering eggs.
  • Aphids, which can be effectively controlled by targeting their overwintering eggs during the dormant season.
  • Psyllids, particularly during the dormant and bud-burst stages of fruit trees.
  • Whiteflies, often managed in protected environments using horticultural oils.

Rates and timing

The timing of application is crucial for the success of paraffin oil treatments. The most common use occurs during the dormant season (late winter or early spring) before bud break.

During the growing season, application rates must be carefully controlled to prevent phytotoxicity. Typically, lower concentrations (0.5% to 1.5%) are used to protect foliage while still effectively managing pest populations.

Thorough coverage is the most important factor in application. Because the oil works only through direct contact, every part of the plant, including the undersides of leaves and crevices in the bark, must be treated.

Preparation of the spray mixture requires constant agitation to ensure a stable emulsion. Poorly emulsified oil can result in uneven distribution and may cause damage due to localized high concentrations.

Optimal application conditions involve calm weather, avoiding periods of extreme cold or high heat, to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment and safety for the crops.

Restrictions

Phytotoxicity is the primary limitation for paraffin oil use. Plants under stress due to drought, low nutrient status, or heat should not be treated, as they are significantly more susceptible to damage.

Application during high temperatures (above 25°C or 77°F) should be strictly avoided. The oil film can trap heat and disrupt plant respiration, leading to leaf scorching and fruit browning.

Paraffin oils are strictly incompatible with sulfur-containing products and certain fungicides like captan. A minimum interval of 2–3 weeks is required between these types of treatments to prevent severe chemical reactions.

Avoid using oils on plants with delicate or pubescent (hairy) leaves, as the oil can persist longer on these surfaces, leading to a physiological imbalance and potential plant death.

Storage conditions must be monitored to prevent the oil emulsion from freezing or overheating, as improper storage leads to chemical separation and a complete loss of efficacy.
