Orange oil

Description

Mode of action

Orange oil is a botanical extract derived from the peel of citrus fruits, primarily consisting of the active compound limonene. It functions as a potent, broad-spectrum biopesticide suitable for integrated pest management programs.

The mode of action is predominantly physical: the oil dissolves the waxy epicuticular layer of insects and the cell membranes of fungal spores. This disruption leads to rapid dehydration and the immediate cessation of biological activity in the target pest.

Because the action is strictly contact-based, thorough spray coverage is essential to achieve successful results. The formulation works by physically suffocating and desiccating soft-bodied insects and inhibiting fungal mycelial growth.

Orange oil is recognized for its short residual activity and rapid environmental degradation. It leaves no toxic residues on treated crops, making it a reliable solution for harvest intervals close to the consumption date.

It acts as a multi-target agent, which helps mitigate the risk of resistance development. Regular usage in a crop protection program can provide a sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic chemical pesticides.

What it targets

The substance is effective against a variety of soft-bodied agricultural pests, including aphids, whiteflies, thrips, and spider mites. It is particularly useful for controlling populations in greenhouse environments.

In terms of plant pathology, orange oil is widely applied as a fungicide to combat powdery mildew. It disrupts the development of spores, effectively limiting the spread of the disease across the host plant.

Rates and timing

Application rates are typically defined as a percentage of the final tank mixture, usually ranging from 0.2% to 0.5% concentration. The volume of water per hectare should ensure complete wetting of all leaf surfaces.

Timing should be optimized based on pest monitoring data. Due to its short persistence, applications may need to be repeated at intervals of 7 to 10 days to protect new growth and manage emerging generations of pests.

Restrictions

A primary limitation is the potential for phytotoxicity under high-temperature conditions or intense sunlight. Application during the hottest part of the day should be strictly avoided to prevent leaf scorching.

Always verify compatibility with other products before tank-mixing. It is highly recommended to perform a small-scale phytotoxicity test on a few plants before applying the treatment to the entire field or orchard.
