After successfully penetrating the cuticle, the fungus develops into the insect's hemocoel, where it multiplies as yeast-like bodies or mycelium. It feeds on the insect's internal tissues while releasing toxic secondary metabolites, such as destruxins.
These toxins cause systemic paralysis and metabolic failure, leading to the death of the host. Following the death of the insect, if external conditions are humid, the fungus emerges from the carcass to produce new spores for further infection.
