Mode of action

This substance is a synthetic sex pheromone component that replicates natural insect signaling. It is primarily utilized in agricultural settings to disrupt the mating cycle of specific lepidopteran pests by confusing males and preventing them from finding females.

By releasing a consistent concentration of the pheromone into the orchard air, the chemical acts as a communication barrier. Because males cannot locate mates, the reproductive cycle is interrupted, which prevents the population buildup of the next generation of larvae.

This technique is a cornerstone of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as it reduces the reliance on broad-spectrum synthetic insecticides. It promotes a healthier ecosystem by sparing natural predators and parasitoids that naturally regulate insect populations.

The substance is highly specific, targeting only the intended species without affecting beneficial insects such as bees or predatory mites. It poses no toxic threat to humans, mammals, or birds, making it a safe choice for modern fruit production.

Performance relies on a consistent release rate and appropriate distribution across the site. In large, uniform orchards, this method provides highly effective and long-lasting protection compared to localized or small-scale applications.

What it targets

The primary target is the codling moth (Cydia pomonella), one of the most destructive pests in pome fruit orchards worldwide. By controlling the mating process, growers can prevent the significant fruit damage caused by larval boring.

It is also effective against several related species of leafrollers and the oriental fruit moth. Furthermore, the substance is widely used in monitoring traps to provide accurate data for timing other necessary protective measures.

Rates and timing

Application rates depend on the specific dispenser design and the required season length. Generally, 400 to 600 dispensers per hectare are recommended to establish a sufficient pheromone cloud within the orchard canopy.

Dispensers should be installed before the first flight of the moths in the early spring. Placement in the upper third of the tree canopy ensures the best dispersion of the active ingredient across the orchard foliage.

Depending on the type of dispenser, the substance remains active for 90 to 150 days. This duration usually covers the critical reproductive phases of the pest, eliminating the need for mid-season reapplication under normal conditions.

For monitoring purposes, 1–3 traps per hectare are placed throughout the orchard. These traps use small pheromone lures that are replaced periodically, typically every 4–6 weeks, to maintain maximum attractiveness.

Restrictions

Efficiency is significantly reduced on small or fragmented landholdings. In these cases, mated females from neighboring untreated areas can migrate into the orchard, rendering the mating disruption less effective.

Proper storage is critical for pheromone stability; dispensers should be kept in airtight containers inside a refrigerator until ready for use. Exposure to high temperatures or direct sunlight before installation will degrade the active substance.

This method should not be treated as a stand-alone solution in areas with extremely high pest pressure. Supplementary measures, such as biological or targeted chemical treatments, should be applied if monitoring indicates a breach in population thresholds.

Growers must ensure that dispensers are securely attached and protected from wildlife or machinery damage. Displaced or broken units must be replaced immediately to ensure the integrity of the pheromone concentration in the field.
